Just thinking for when I pass my DAS really...

Am I likely to be able to get a big bike for under £1000 when I've passed, that isn't going to be a complete rusty deathtrap?

If so, what bikes?

I'll have however much I get with my CG plus (probably) a tiny bit extra to go on top, so that'll have to do.

Cheers,

Toby

Of course.

Toby darling. People say that the sv650 has one of the worst reputations for going all rusty in winter. More so for the er5 I owned. Now, out of those two, none had any finish problems because I looked after them and coated them with wd religiously.

So any bike will rot to fuck if you don't look after it.

Bandits. Diversions. Older Gpz's. Higher mileage sv's (pushing it). They all don't have exceptional good finish or reputations for not rusting but I can only imagine those are the sort of bikes you are after.

When you find a bike you are interested in and have the money aside all set to go, let us know and we can all pass judgement Razz Thats what we're here for. The question you've asked right now is jsut a little....you know.....vague. I could list all bikes ever made (wish I could have found a lsit and pasted it here heh) but that would be no use to you.

Hi,

I mainly wanted to know whether any bike under £1000 is most likely to be a shed or not, I don't really mind rust at all, as I can sort new parts every month when I get paid, it's just mainly that I'll be wanting a cheap bike that is safe.

you can find tons of bikes under 1K and lots at just a shade over 1K too ,

note they won't be in great nick though and will be older and higher milage , though good 500 examples can be found for 1.5K.

My bike came with 12 months MOT , but had NO brake pad wear left needed brakes bleeding , and hadn't had an oil change or airfilter change since ever ,

get one with a long MOT then or a recent one as this means it has at least passed a minimum saftey assessment, infact I know a bloke who for 1K is selling a Yamaha 1000CC "genesis) bike which has only done 29K. I trust the bloke and hes currently putting it back together.

and do the std safety checks:

tyres look
wheel bearings grab n shake
suspension sit on it and abuse it
chain pull for tension
head bearings etc.

service history any odd noises

If so, what bikes?

Good nice NTVs can be had for under 1K
So can shite SVs
abused GTs can go for under £200
horrible GPZ500s for under 1K (one for 1.2K @ bolton ESB 3 miles from Whitefield he'll go lower cus its been there for ages).

ER-5s (speedwells has one he'll go to 1.25K if you push him , its low milage clean and non abused.

Older bandits

or private sales are good places to look

I'm off to look at an '02 plate GPZ500 at the weekend for a very healthy price (WELL under a grand). Needs a couple of things doing to it (basic stuff, chain, fork seals etc) but if it is what he says it is, I'm stealing it. I don't really need another one but at the price this guy is talking about for a 4 year old bike I'd be mad not to have a look.

What I'm saying is, keep your eyes open, occasionaly a bargain does fall in your lap.

Actualy. GPZ500 is generally speaking not a bad one to look at anyway, even for normal prices.

Shop around, there are deals to be had but you need to search everywhere. Could grab a cheap VFR400 for that money, and it would still be clean.

Thumbs Up

in my opinion, you can get an ok bike for under a grand, the annoying thing is that just a little more cash will buy you something quite alot better (but I suppose thats the case at any price, but its more noticable the lower you go).

I paid about a grand for my last bike (GS500) and it ran alright, was in shit condition and looked a wreck, but it did have a fault or 2 (tank was full of rust so had to make sure I didn't run to empty and the brakes fucked up once, throwing me off). You don't get alot of peace of mind for that price, especially if you're mechanically inept (like me).

For me its the most annoying thing about bikes, the pricing structure of the second market is such that even an old shit heap is 500 quid, whereas I have mates who've bought cars that run fine for 50 quid. Whats that all about?

cus theres more supply in the car market while bikers are a niche (but growing group) which is a good thing , imagine if bikes were dead common , yer granny would come flying over on her GSX1000 and you mum would do the shopping on her CBR600.

and cars have bodywork to protect the important stuff inside .

yeah its true, I realise its a supply issue but still, it pisses me off Smile

I guess it has benefits- bikes obviously depreciate less than cars do.

Ive had a few cheapies.

more workaday machines like GT550s, GS500s and the like are a better bet than say an old FZR1000.

Be prepared to get your hands dirty.

Would you be able to find a smashed up sports 600 for less than a grand?

I mean one with no plastics, lights or headlights left but with a decent frame and motor in it or what sort of price would something like that go for?

You'd be able to get an FZR6 for around a grand. They are decent bikes (if you promise to be carefull on it).

You can get some surprisingly good prices on some of the more 'off the wall' grey imports, worth a browse to see what you can see.

Get a cheap mid milage Divvy. Mine cost me a grand and has been fine except for the Exhaust. It had 28k on the clock when I had it and I've put 6k on top of that on one set of tyres. As long as the exhaust is sound, you can't really go wrong with one. I'll probably sell mine in 6 months anyway and upgrade to something newer.
