You may or may not find this informative?...

Today I noticed something odd on my Windows desktop. The little yellow update-icon appeared, and told me there were an update available..

Curious as I am, I saw it were an update to the "Genuine Advantage" thing.
It stated it would help me determine whether or not I have a valid cdkey...

A search for the article nr KB905474 at google doesnt reveal much, so this must be a brand new update.

Due to my settings for the windows update and my curiosity, I avoided this update (even though I use a valid key). But I think many, especially private persons, arent using valid keys, and many of those automaticly update their windows box when updates are available.

I think an explanation for the market share and popularity of Microsoft software lies within the piracy. The possibity to copy the software and run it on another pc too, both for business and privates. The immaterial product is easy not to respect (just look at the music business).
So, Why this action from Microsoft all of a sudden ? Because they want to get more paying customers, or maybe because of the size the corporation have gotten ? Or maybe just to annoy non-paying 'customers' ?

I think this step both have a good and a bad side. Good, because maybe people will get their eyes open and actually see, there's plenty of other opportunities than Windows, and for free too. Bad, (in deed) for those who 'cant live without Windows', but wont pay for the software. The anger tends to be spilled on poor it guys who cant do anything.

Is this the first step towards a wider adoption of opensource ? Time will tell...

ah well, who cares really, petrol is way over priced and people pay for it,

Windows CD's are way overpriced, people SHOULD pay for it.

(IN my opinion anyway.)

I've had the same bullshit on my computer, and I know mine is legit as I have the fucking CD's sitting on my bookshelf.

Luckily though, all its stopped is me being able to manually search for updates. MS will still send through essential security updates through their automated update thingy which you can set on the control panel.

As long as im safe, im happy. If not, I want a refund from that cunt Bill whatsisname

****************************
Open any folder.
Tools > Folder Options > View and de-select [turn off] ' Simple
file
sharing '.
( You can turn that back on later if you use it)

Find 2 files in c:\windows\system32 folder :-

WgaLogon.dll
WgaTray.exe

Select file.

Right click Properties > Security > Advanced.
Select ' System ' name.
Select ' Edit ' button
Find ' Traverse Folder / Execute ' and tick ' Deny ' box.
'OK' out, and ' Yes ' we want to continue etc.

Windows Update thinks it's installed and continues as if it is.
But no welcome screen badge or systray icon .

Or just install this Windows.Genuine.Advantage.Validation.v1.5.526.0.CRACKED-ETH0.rar

Replace the file in the system32 directory and XP thinks that your copy of XP is legit.

I found that file while looking for a way round. Doesn't work. Although I didn't try the version info method.

Before pressing 'Custom' or 'Express' buttons paste this text to the address bar and press enter:

javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all')

It turns off the trigger for the key check.

Thumbs Up

Works for me just fine. Thumbs Up

I had the one installed from the automatic updates, I cannot see why it would not work on all machines.

And for me mate, cheers for that. I didn't actually notice this before to be honest, but I formatted yesterday and once it had updated this popped up and started to annoy the hell out of me.

Thumbs Up from me simon.

That file doesn't stop the notifications.

It does avoid the validation checks on the site though.

It has for me.

The annoying little system tray icon is now gone and it's stopped popping up the notification that I might be running a counterfeit Windows.

I'll try the file again, but this time edit the version info. Like you said, with 15 different ways, one has to work at least.

The denying the file access way works perfectly. It's described earlier in this thread.

Meh - didn't work for me, they just carried on popping up and I had to wait 5 seconds before I got into windows etc.

Some methods must work better for some than others.
