Say if I bought a 50cc Scooter/Moped, would it be unrestictable by default? Or would I have to investigate to find out if this is a possibility?

Also say if I took my CBT, got a restricted 50cc, could I simply unrestrict it when I turn 17? Would I need more qualifications, etc?

Thanks! Sorry for being a total idiot, I tried looking this all up on the web but I can't seem to understand it.

hi 50cc arent de-restricted by default when new, but their are ways of telling, if the exhaust has a pipe cut off near the engine thats a sign, and much easier if it does 40+ then yes it has been de-ristricted Very Happy and yes you can just drive it at 17 or a 125( thats the better option) on a CBT to be honest my 50 was de-restricted at 250 miles and from there on at 16 i could get top speed of 50 from it Very Happy it does effect your insurance, if the police realise that is!!

Every 50cc you buy is "Restricted" by law.

Most 50cc's when De-Restricted will do around 50mph, but, if you De-Restrict it when your 16, your insurance will be Void. Meaning if you get caught, you'll get points and a fine OR i've heard theres a new law saying they might even crush your bike!

However, i'm getting a 50cc in 4months when i turn 16, and i will be getting it De-Restricted. Just make sure you drive 30mph on the roads and never above, and the police will never know Smile. I'm getting mine De-Restricted for the fields ill be going on, as i'm getting a Crosser.

When/If you get the bike, you can post on here and people will help you.

I think it's a job done quite easily at home, if you have adequate tools and a good workspace.

If you buy brand new with a warranty - it's best to get a dealer to de-restrict it. Most don't really care, and some might want a note from your parents saying they don't mind (it does happen! Laughing ).

Basically its a very simple job, you could have a look at this guide which can be applied to most scooters:

https://scootnfast.com/scootnfast/Tuning_mods/De-Restricting.htm

Also - whatever you do, do NOT even consider buying one of the very cheap scooters from ebay with funny chinese names. These have 4 stroke engines (in a 50 thats very slow) - and have a poor build quality apparently. They cant be derestricted easily.

Smile

OK, thanks. I saw those weird cheap scooters on eBay, and my instinct told me to steer well clear anyway! Decent link, as well.

Do not buy bikes of Ebay at all to be honest, It's better if you go to www.biketrader.co.uk and search for bikes close to you.

Personally i'd stick to the following makes:

-Honda
-Yamaha
-Aprilia
-Gilera
-Derbi

And a few others that i can't think of Razz.

Personally, i'd buy a second hand bike that has done 500miles-1000miles because it takes 500-700miles for the engine to kick in, As you will ruin your engine if you De-Restrict it before your engine has wore in.
