Speaker Problems! GRRR!

Righto, I've got this philips 5.1 surround sound system that I got about 4 months ago. Everything was fine until watching a DVD today I realised that the Sub-Woofer and Centre speakers weren't outputting any sound. I checked the obvious things of making sure the cables were in correctly, I even put them in the onboard sound driver and they still didn;t work however, I can still control the volum from the main "centre" speaker and it was still making that low "hum" sound (however now it isn't).

Have the sub and the centre speakers blown or is it a cable problem? I've checked they are in the right ports, swapped them around, forcefully put them in the holes. To no avail.

I hope they aren't broken because I think I have lost my receipt.

A receipt isn't the only legal proof of purchase as stores can elect not to give a receipt if they so wish.

In fact, it's illegal for them to accept alternative proof (Goes against the sale of goods act)

Something like a bank statement would suffice.

If you're nice to them most of them will look it up on their computer system and confirm the purchase anyway.

I paid by cash though and cannot remember the exact date of purchase.

What sound card are you using? or is it onboard like nvidia soundstorm?

Basicaly the center speaker and sub would only put out any sound if the sound was coming from their 'direction'. Try it in a game so you can hear a sound from one point from all directions.

There are loads of settings in creative/nvidia etc software, may also be a problem with how you have the wires plugged into the sound card, as with mine it recognised the sub and center speaker as one.

A sub should always put out sound, it's not part of a surround system, it just makes the depth of the sound deeper.

Try just hooking it up to something really simple; shove it in an MP3 player and see what sound comes out. If nothign does, you know something is actually wrong with the hardware.

I'm using a philips sound card, but also had the same problem using the onboard sound, not sure who makes it, it came with my Dell motherboard and PC.

I tried using the test feature software and sound worked from every speaker but the sub and the centre one.
