One of my ear doesn't clear!

I want to do some diving on holiday (not scuba), last time I did it I burst my ear drum because of the pressure build up, which hurt, a lot. When I hold my nose and blow, my right ear clears perfectly but my left ear simply doesn't clear. If I could somehow make it clear then the pressure wouldn't build up in it and I could dive freely as I used to be able to!

Has anyone had this problem before, and solved it?

Have you tried ear drops?

If not, ask at the Chemist for Otex. I always found it to be better than other names so don't let them palm you off with some inferior own brand product. Might need syringing if it's particularly bad.

Yeah I had ear drops to clean them once, but it was particularly annoying because the ear drops went in but didnt come out, so I couldn't hear from that ear for days!

Maybe I should just accept the fact that I have a weird ear. Might walk down to the pharmacy now that they're open.

you might have what i get, i cant remember the tube, but its at the back of your nose if you get a cold ect it blocks and can get you an ear infection in fluid ect that sits in your ear, if you go to your doctors they will give you decongestants ( Sorry about spelling ) they work really well, it can also be classed as glue ear. at the moment neither of my ears pop, ive got the tablets and antibiotics.

hope this helps. ps its not perm.

Eustachiun tube? Think thats the name, runs from ears to nose and is for equalizing the pressure. Could be an infection in there causing a blockage, or could be a wax build up in the outer ear.

Simple remedies may help, from submerging your ears in a warm bath to allow the wax to soften, to using the drops from a pharmacist. The drops will help in clearing it but I find just letting water flow in and out in the shower or bath keeps it clear.

And if you use earplugs on the bike change them, if its an infection you may be constantly reinfecting them.

Hi

Probably worth wandering along to the doctors. Hopefully it just needs nothing more than being syringed out.

All the best

Keith

not going against you keith but id use that as a last resort as it can cause scaring to the drum which can make you rather death, happened to my sister, its not often it happens but the risk is still there, also if you get your ears wet, MAKE SURE you dry them as this can cause problems when there acting funny, i got told to use a hair dryer on a low setting from the ear department in the hospital Thumbs Up

Hi

Ouch Firefox. Nasty one.

Exposure to loud noise (ie, riding a bike) tends to increase the build up of ear wax. Thus the suggestion to get them cleaned out.

All the best

Keith

Thanks for all the advice!

I'll pop along to the quacks and see what they say, the pharmacist just suggested ear drops and didn't really understand my story about the ear drops going in and not coming out again.

I would definately get to the docs. In my job we are sent straight away to the docs with ear problems. It can be very painful in certain situations so I would pop along if I were you.

I thought that although it's still called 'getting your ears syringed' they're not actually as brutal as they used to be.
They now fill your ear up with warm liquid and then drain it away (rather than previous years....or ears.... where they literally used to suck the wax out)
Hope its not serious carvell... definitely worth getting checked out though! Thumbs Up

I had a similar problem this time last year due to an infection.

In my experience if you go to the quacks your GP will take a look initially and then either...

A Tell you to get some drops from the chemist (they advised Earex for me) and make a return visit if problems persist
or
B Book you in with the nurse for them to be cleared (basically a warm jet of water into your lug 'ole!). It's painless!

I had to go twice to the nurse for the jet wash and she did say that although the drops might not feel like they're doing you any good they help to loosen the build of crap in the inner ear ( Sick ) so she advised to continue to use them during the time I was having problems.
