PostPosted: 13:13 - 15 May 2006    Post subject: Gas valves and spectrum analysers. Reply with quote

I'm working on a project to create a home gas fire that works with the music plugged in to it.

So far it's only in the research stage. I am thinking I will need a number of gas valves that can be variable on an electric circuit.
Then it seems to be a matter of getting a spectrum analyser and getting it set to control the gas valves.

Easy, no. But if anyone could shed even a little bit of light on how I may go about this it would help alot.

Cheers

If you are connecting to mains gas then i wouldnt tell to many people what you are doing.
Unless you are a corgi registered gas fitter you may well get into some heavy shit.

sorry about being a safty nazi but i have to work around these laws.

I'll be the first to ask then.
Why and how exactly do you get a project to rig up a gas fire to a 'spectrum analyser'?

I presume you mean like a car stereo display, the light bars that bump up and down in time with the music? I think I can see where you're going with that.

I would have thought it would be very complicated, unstable and incredibly dangerous.

I want to see pics.

interesting idea
very hard to get it to work
very easy to make a serious problems of uncontrollable flames

fortunately I believe it will remain just an idea, so i dont feel duty bound to try to warn your neighbours of your dangerous project

something you could do, would be to put charged plates either side of the flame, and make it dance from side to side

a flame consisted of charged ionised particles, so an electric field will push them in a direction

the output of a music amplifier could be used to provide the electric field so it would move from side to side in time with the music

however dont try it with a gas fire, do it with a bunsen burner instead. if you start trying to alter a gas fire, you will have problems

i know it would work side to side, but it might also work vertically

How about trying it with some sort of water fountain? Much safer and would look pretty cool for those summer BBQ's.

It would never be made by me but I was trying to get the correct electrics and piping so I could take it to someone else to make.

Some good ideas especially the left to right flame and water. However it does seem to complicated for me to do at the present so I'll work on some of the other ideas. Will keep it in the maybe later box.

As an explanation I'm doing product design at uni so not just a random crackpot idea... well maybe a little bit.

hows the big bang engine coming along ?

try being less ambitious

how about a revolving remote organiser (remotes held vertically)

(Id buy one as I have about 6)

you need something which is not technically advanced but is novel and easily marketed

gas valves for modern boilers are modulating so that they give a soft light on pilot and gently increase to full burn.

the flame sensor and boiler stat then modulates flames up and down to give right burner presure for flame usually between 5-16mbar depending on size of jet. then need to think about jets and materials for flame bed.

the gas valve bit of this project is piss easy just buy one off the self. the difficult bit will be controlling the thing with the electronics, could try some boiler pcbs to start you off then just need to feed the right signals into it.

will either be spectacularly impressive or will end in the fire brigade hosing down the remains of the fire.

good luck

id personally cotrol it with different gas valves(could be big tho) the pcb's from boilers wont work (or i cant see how they would anyway).
And as for it blowing up, if youve got a gas valve, which stops the flame is about as dangerous as your boiler/fire!

its all the joints in pipe work that he would have to make which could be the problem

why?
8mm micro bore and endfead joints, soldered up no problem.
Making the pipework up would be the least of his problems.

Haha I know it's ambitious. Going down a different track for the project now. Just as hard but alot safer.

Bigbang mod is only for when I get a slabside. Found a good place to get the camshafts done though.

So you can get valves that aren't physical switches? That was what I thought the main problem would be.

At the moment I just have to create something that could work as opposed to a fully working system.

one other slight problem with gas valves is that they work using a solenoid. in that dc voltage energises an eletromagnet which atracts an iron rod thus opening and closing valve. so any signal is likely to be ac volts which will have to be converted to dc (a job either done by the boiler pcb or the wiring harness to the valve)

the other problem i fore see is ironning out the time delay between sending the signal to the valve and valve energising and finally opening, usually a 1-2 seconds which is nothing in a boiler cycle but trying to syncroise to music will be very tricky indeed need to buffer music signal possibly?

could possibly try valves used for nitrous oxide injection but just guessing here have no idea how long their response time is. the only legal thing is that any valve used to supply natural gas must be approved and have a Gas Council number

this is very interesting and could work in theory its getting it into practice where all the fun will be had Wink

sorry for all the tecky stuff Thumbs Up

Why dont you try spraying different chemical salts into the gas flame, to produce different coloured flames, in sync with the music. I would imagine it would be a lot less dangerous, and the the results far more attractive imho. If you are able to get hold of a small musical fountain pump, all you would need to do is connect a different soultion to each nozzle, and perhaps an atomizer of some sort, to send a fine jet into the flames. you could avoid the complexity of adapting a spectrum analyser. Just make sure that the salts you choose are not potentially toxic.

I did consider different gas colours but I thought it would be a little bit tacky because the market I'd be aiming towards is like this.

https://www.fireplaces-oldham.co.uk/Ikon_Limestone_Bowl_Gas_Fires.htm

Also it's more about when you have classical music playing and it's at a lull and the fires just chilling then at the chreshendo (terrible spelling) the fire goes nuts.

My head hurts from all the thinking about this and not really get that far.
