If one were to run out of gas on a fuel injected bike, what detrimental effects, if any, would there be on the engine?

I ask this because I misjudged my tank range by about a mile the other day and was riding the poor sputtering thing for about 1/8 of a mile before it finally gave up. Just hoping I wasn't inadvertantly causing any harm to the motor.

Wouldn't worry about it. The only problem is it wont start, you can fix this by refilling it though. Thumbs Up

Hi

Possibly shortened the life of the fuel pump (they rely on the fuel flowing through them to keep them cool), but that is probably it. Only other thing I would consider would be that it would drag in any rubbish from the bottom of the tank into the fuel filter.

Isn't that cutting it a bit close? Choosing only to fill it up with <5 miles left?

Surely your range would also be slightly different each time anyway?

Just put some injector cleaner fuel additive in it, just as a precautionary measure to make sure any fuel tank gunge that may have got stuck in the injectors gets cleaned away.

Petrol engines can run out of fuel ok, but Diesel engines have to have the system bled of air Smile

Stopped to help a car which had broken down once. Turned out he had run out of diesel. He knew he had to prime the diesel pump manually. Pity that what he thought was the button to prime the pump was actually a switch for the bonnet being up. Strangely had no effect on the diesel pump Laughing .

Hah. Thanks for the advice. Glad I didn't destroy anything as I have a habit of doing so. Still don't think I'll be purposely running out again anytime soon...

i ran out of petrol on my ped once had to walk it home from work, going up the hill was shit but going down the other side was ok going about 6mph and smoking a fag was almost worth the walk up lol

Ran out of petrol once when my GS was new. Just trying to find the tank range (230miles). As Kickstart said the fuel pump doesn't like it, mine squeeled as the fuel ran dry, but turned off as soon as it did and filled it up. Thumbs Up

The only thing that springs to mind (may only be cars though) is that if you get a misfire it can send unburnt fuel down the exhaust and damage the catalitic convertor as it is working overtime to 'clean' the fuel out

But the reason you would get a missfire is because there is no fuel anyway so the CAT is safe. Wink

Yes but at least you wont get stuck somewhere having no fuel.

I have run out of fuel twice in my life, and on both occasions i was lucky enough to run out near a petrol station and so just pushed the vehicle to the pump.

The time i did it on a bike, i remembered stinkwheels trick of tilting the bike over to get a bit more fuel out of the tank, and it worked a treat. so thanks stink.

if you're running on gas, in a bike that uses petrol, then i'm surprised you can get it to go, never mind go for long enough to run out Wink

my tank should be good for about 120/130 miles but I normally fill up as its gettign near 100.... why risk it?
When I had my first bike at 17 it broke down all the time, so I learnt the hard way what a bitch it is pushing a bike for miles. No thank you.

yeah, but I bought mine from a breakers on the cheap and it was a bit of a dog. For a while after I got it, the thing used to run great for about 15 mins then mysteriously splutter, die and refuse to start Confused think I pushed it further than I rode it during that time. Didn't have a clue why, checked everything and then had it into a proper cagiva place and they weren't even sure. Ended up replacing a fair few bits before it was sorted, so still not exactly sure what the main cause of the problem was.
Funnily enough, my little brother just bought one (despite me reminding him what mine was like). Still, he's got a 2004 raptor version, much nicer than my old one. I was home over the weekend and had a look at it, brought back some old memories Smile
