New computerised MOT's

Well got the old bandit MOT'd the other day but i couldn' believe it when he first of all weighed the bike, then asked ME to go on the scales to be weighed, i was like "aye right".. but he was serious

about weighing the bike + rider! why? the bikes getting an MOT, not me?! or is it for some sort of braking distance calculation or something? ..

plus if i sold the bike would the MOT be invalid since the new rider would be a different weight and therefore be a different stopping distance!? crazy fools..

maybe it's juts me,

why weigh the rider?

I do car mots not bikes but i would think it would be because the tester has to calculate the braking efficiencies, or rather the computer does and the weight is in the equation. But sometimes the computer doesnt have the specific model so they go on what they see.
So in order to calculate your bikes brakes efficiency he needs the weight.
Total brake effort x 100 = % Efficiency

Not sure why he couldnt sit on it and work it out though...are you 20 stone or something.

It is so that the braking efficiency can be worked out, although really it should be the tester that was weighed as it would of been him on the bike when he did the braking force test.

i'm quite light me, the scales were a tad out as i'm just under 10 stone . I was the one on the bike when he was doing the braking force test.. anywhooz

The weighing thing is part of the test, so yes, all stations should do it. However, depending on the method of tetsing the braking force it may not be necessary. On a roller brake tester, if the wheel locks then has passed, you don't need to work out the efficiency and so you don't need the weight.

he was using an old school method by the looks of it.. had a harness round the front forks which got pulled by by cable by some sort of analog scale .. so he had to operate that whilst i sat on the bike.

Was at my friendlyish local bike shop yesterday and they were using bathroom scales to weigh bike and rider at the same time how the feck did that work? They could only do one wheel at a time

It would appear that the test should be done on the weight of the bike plus tester according to the testing manual. This seems fucking stupid as a lighter rider is more likely to pass the braking test. Hardly an objective test.

By implication, if your bike has iffy brakes and a fat bastard comes out to do your MOT, demand someone thinner or take it somewhere else.

Also, it would seem a bike could JUST fail its brake test then pass it five minutes later by making the tester take his steelies off, with the brakes being dangerous before he did this and safe after.

Maybe this is why the guy weighed you rather than himself on the bike, was he a right salad dodger?

I had my bike mot's a couple of weeks ago. They used electronic scales & weighed the front and back wheels. Not the rider. I think its something to do with working out the weight distribution. I'm pretty sure he had to enter the weights onto the computer when he was filling in all the details. I'm not sure what the procedure is for the brake test as he didn't do mine. The only check he made was that my bearings were ok & my brakes wern't binding.....He's an old mate so he knows the bikes ok other than a race can...
