Hey, im Rob and new to these forums, sorry if this is the wrong place to post.

I am 16 in a few weeks and have my CBT on my birthday. My parents managed to get a loan so i could have a brand new moped (i know i could have got an old one, but i am paying back the money).

I have a 2006 Pegeuot Speedfight 2

My question is, on the road will older bikers or people with bigger bikes automatically think I am a Chav? I am certainly not a chav, I am a mature and sensible 15 year old guy but I dont want to lose respect on the roads. I havnt took my test yet but I can imagine I will be a good rider and not piss drivers off with awful riding.

So I want to know if you bikers automatically associate mopeds with being chavy and do you treat them differently on the road?

Thanks, Rob Wink

Hi, It is possible to be a moped rider but not be a chav Wink

Also you should have gone for a piaggio / gilera / honda / yamaha ... Not a Pug! There not the best of bikes.

Also when you turn 17, book your test and get something bigger!

Have fun on the roads and stay safe Mr. Green

Hi, 50cc mopeds are a great way or learning the roads, and gaining experience. As long as you ride safe and don't wear track suits whilst riding or stick your feet out going round corners, nobody will think you are chav. Also please don't bother buying any 'performance parts' for your bike, anyone who has done it will tell you how much of a waste of time it was, keep it standard and ride it for what it is. Hope this helps Dan Thumbs Up

No I don't think most people will think you're a chav. I would'nt worry about it, its better than getting the bus. At 16 what other options do you have anyway? Go for it.

Usually for me it depends on if the moped rider is wearing a burberry tracksuit and balancing his helmet on his head whilst smoking and talking on his phone to his 'mishes' in 'da ghetto'.

Basically if you want to ride a 50cc moped, you have to be prepared to stand your ground on the road, car drivers will try and overtake you sometimes, and it is critical that you stay in the middle of your lane, slightly to the right and not ride in the gutter. Also if you are making the effort, always display two L plates and ride in full gear, this would set the 'Person who is riding it to bridge the gap before stepping up' from the 'Chav who has got da mintest ped innit'.

If you want to be shown respect from bigger bikes, full gear and proper conduct on the road is in order, maybe even give them a nod and see what happens. And lastly, don't try 'mod' it to get 100mph because it really won't happen, you need to tell yourself that you are happy with the 45mph that you will probably be getting.

In my opinion anyway. Thumbs Up Karma

It's all a matter of opinion. Many people consider all moped riders to be chavs; I rode one up until September of last year, and I would consider myself as anti-chav as it is possible to be. Yet I also consider all the other ped riders at my school chavs, just from what I've seen and how they ride. Every time I ride up it's 'how fast you been on your bike bruv?'

I think if you give off all the wrong messages - hoody, bright white trainers, riding dangerously - people will think you're an idiot. Dress to impress - jacket, trousers, gloves (I think boots are overkill on a moped Wink ) and you'll probably be treated more like a proper road user.

Unfortunately you haven't given yourself the best head start as far as your vehicle is concerned; Speedfights are very popular with 'Da Chavs'. However I disagree with Type_Mo, that doesn't make them a bad moped. As far as mopeds go, they've been styled well, and let's face it, restricted, any performance issues are irrelevant.

Having bought new, expect a hefty loss next year when you sell and upgrade to a 125/400/car.

I loved my lil piaggio typhoon, spent alot fo money on it, then lsot it all when it got nicked Evil or Very Mad Crying or Very sad Thumbs Down

It was very good for teaching me rules of the roads, and helped me gaina lot of experiance by crashing and working on the bike myself! The only thing i hated was the noise of the thing! i kept the standerd air box on because an open filter doesnt do shit on them. i had a sports pipe for performance, not for noise. I then decided to buy a standerd looking sports pipe as the other one was too loud, then it really did sound like a Hairdryer Embarassed

Anyways, heres a pic of it just before it got nicked...

Spot on. Thumbs Up However as long as you keep is stock looking, so not sticking hundreds of playstation2 stickers or rossi numbers all over it, and keeping it clean will make you look a bit more of a respectable. Very Happy Dan Thumbs Up

Binge on here had a few speedfights, i think one of them was a 55mph 70cc big bore. Give him a PM if u want to know more. Personally for me, it's got to be the piaggio NRG extreme. Cheaper than the speedfight and cheaper. It handles well and if you fall off enough times, it will make you a better rider. I had mine close to 3 years ago.

My bro had a Piaggio NRG Extreme and it was constantly going wrong. He said it was really heavy. That was a 2001 51 Reg. He then got a Speedfight 50 on an X Plate which is now mine, not once has it gone wrong.

Ahhh scooters! Imo, yes they are fun, but i also think gears are invaluable, its just me and it makes me a very very bad man, but i just cant take scooter riders seriously! Sorry! I dont think ive ever had a nod off a scooter rider either. I say if your parents are paying for it, get yourself a respectable 50cc bike like mine Mr. Green

*ooh im such a showoff*

Personally I'd say rather than trying to eek out the extra 4mph buy adding on 'sports' exhausts or air filters just wear the right gear (Falling off at 20mph without gloves will lose you a few fingers)

I met a scooter rider at a show a few months back and was impressed by the fact he was wearing protective gear... it's a fairly sad world when something so obvious becomes impressive.

To avoid being grouped under the chav section of two wheelers
you need to wear decent kit, I know a 50 doesnt go a million miles an hour.

I got knocked off my 50, if I hadnt of had an armoured jacket for when I went into the car I'd have more than just vertebrae I can click in sequence wrong with me.

get some gloves and a jacket at least

please don't when stopped up somewhere perch your helmet on top of your head...

generally don't be chavish Laughing

you will always get people/other riders who will class you as something you're not because of their ignorance.

Enjoy it, I loved my 50 sooo much I still think it was the most fun bike I've ever owned, even when I had my 125's I would occasionally take the 50 out Thumbs Up

I've no problem with scooter or any other type of bike, if someone's a twat they are a twat on whatever they ride. As another matter though I don't actually like any vehicle that is restricted in it's performance. I believe they can be dangerous in various traffic/road conditions where they are unable to safely accelerate/obtain a decent speed. At 16 though you really don't have much of an alternative and it's great to have some independence.

if u want some respect on the roads and can only legally get a fiddy, then you should consider getting a geared fiddy, there a lot quicker than the ped twist n go's Thumbs Up

look arround for the following:
derbi gpr
yamaha tzr
rieju rs2
aprillia rs

ect...
