I've been to look at a 2000 model Kwak ZX6R today, advertised for £2500. The bike doesn't have much MOT left but the guy agreed to put it through it if I were to buy the bike. The bike was in really good condition, had new tyres, new chain and sproket, alarm, R and G's. I asked if he'd take £2300 cash but he point blank refused. Fair enough.

I went home, had a think about it and decided to go for it. called the guy up and said I wanted it, he then asked how much I was offering, "2500, like it says in the ad Confused " was my reply. He paused for ages and said OK, "2500 but I won't put it through MOT". This spooked me as he agreed a few hours earlier that he would do the MOT for me, so I'm a little concerned as to why he's changed his mind.

The thing is, I'm 18 so to me this is a hell of alot of money, plus insurance is quite abit, plus unfortunately I need to restrict it.
So should I leave it and look for another one, or take it?

I say go and talk to him about the MOT, and if he refuses then leave it.

£2500 is alot of money to some people, especially me.

Tell him to shove it! If he advertised it as being £2500 and agreed to put an MOT on, then he should put it on. Frankly I wouldn't have just said I'd pay the asking price, I would have knocked £200 off. And even then I would have expected the MOT to be done.

Yeah thats what I was thinking, although the bike is in REALLY good condition. Hmm, I just can't decide!

I tried to get £200 instantly rookie, purely because how many private sales actually get there asking price? The guys just not willing to make a compromise at all.

Neutral

What's the mileage?

There are bikes which are put down as the minimum they're going to take, and if this is one, then fair enough.

Was the MOT advertised as being done or that it would be done?

16,000 miles mate.
It wasn't advertised saying he'd do the MOT, but he told me he would. Fair enough he wouldn't knock anything off, but when he says he'd do the MOT and now he says he won't it just spooks me abit.
Im considering saying that I'll pay for the MOT test, but not for any work that needs doing if thats the case.

If you're willing to pay the full asking price and he's going to let the sale fall though for the sake of a £30 mot then theres either something wrong with the bike or he's an asshole.

Is it a dealer?

Yeah I mean it is only £30 at the ned of the day, but I don't get why he's changed his mind. Its a private sale mate.

Also as it is at 16,000 miles there is there the possibility that the valve clearances haven't been done which is a £500 service.

Walk away would be my advice. he said he would MOT it, then he should. His loss, there are plenty of bikes for sale out there. Is this the first you have looked at? Don't let the heart rule the head. Why would he want to lose a sale for the sake of an MOT, would make me very wary.

That said, it is a good price at this time of year.

I agree with Jon though, if the major service hasn't been done yet, I'd walk.
