I would ring them

Whether or not I would use them is another matter. As I see it, its little different to pulling a number out the phone book or a newspaper ad! Just ask them for a land line or address when they come round so you got "alternative contact means"

If they jip at that then walk away (as it were)

Don't most of them put mobile numbers on their vans so they can carry on taking calls while they're on the move?

Would be a bit silly to leave a landline number if he's going to be out on jobs all day.

I don't know, just what it strikes me as.

granted - It makes sense, however, with no land line, there is a reduced element of accountability/traceability ( I cant think how better to put it).


The landline is also cheaper for people to ring, and you could have an answerphone to take messages. It also wont drop out due to poor network coverage (or is less likely to) and try taking contact details off a customer on teh phone whilst you are on site without a desk or pen/paper to hand.

IMO a landline would be more successful at raising customers (if you doubt that then do you think he would have posted if it only had a landline written down?) and that is what our company vans have and we have no problems for trade at all!

Me and my some time partner have a mobile number, a land line number, and 2 email addresses.

If I was him, I'd put my landline number on the van, but have it re-directed to my mobile if I wasn't there to take the call at home Thumbs Up

no, but they'll have a home, and a landline suggests there is a physical location you can trace them to if their work isn't up-to-scratch.

also, from the builder's point of view, having a landline as well as mobile number (and maybe even a fax number) can suggest a bigger business than simply one man in his van.

it's all about perception more than practicalities

I'd never call one without a landline number as well as a mobile,I drive past two gypsy camps on my way home from work there is everything from landscape gardeners to plumbers to scrap dealers all with only mobile numbers on there vans/trucks.

I was referring to legitimate traders. When the company I work for was founded, it was run from a private address, and initially they had one landline. As the business expanded, they took on a second line to keep private and domestic calls seperate.

builders with no landlines aren't the ones I avoid. It's the ones who ask for money up front. You should never pay a builder a penny untill the job is complete to your satisfaction. Then you shouldn't have to worry about tracing them, cause you shouldn't have to. Wink

Theory sounds good - Practice says that things can look good enough to incite you to hand your hard earned over, but if things go wonky soon after, then you would want to be able to trace them
