someone to send emails that appear to come from me?

I'm getting about 50 emails a day from various hosts saying thqat my emails cant be delivered or have been rejected due to them being spam, i hate to think how many emails are being delivered to people who think that they've come from me!

i've had a copuple of emails from people asking me to stop spamming them so im getting pretty fed up with it, my ISP - freeserve - havent answered my complaint - just sent me a standard 'problems with email' reply Rolling Eyes i've checked my pc for viruses and the mails arent originating from my machine, can anyone suggest what to do next?

I really dont care about the return emails filling my inbox, theyre easy to delete, i just hate to think how many people are getting emails sent in my name!

Would installing Zonealarm and then manually giving permission to anything trying to send data work?

lol, I believe you can do it, because someone already is.

I removed Norton from my pc as it was too much of a headache, I now just have a firewall ,<macafee> and check my pc about once a week at Trend Micro for viruses, Im fairly certain that the mails arent originating from my pc as I turned it off while I was away for a day and on reconnection I had about 50 emails instantly delivered, also my pc is dual boot so if i leave 2000 and reconnect on ME I get the same problem,.

Hi,

POP mail tends to work on a trust policy.

You tell the server your email address, and it send its from that name, there's usually no safeguard making sure you can't specify any address.

If you look up POP3 access in Telnet you will find a tutorial that enables you to connect to a POP server and send an email from any address.

Chances are you've been added to a spam blacklist, which is where users of such accounts like Yahoo flag a message as spam, and if enough users flag it, the address is blocked as a spam account.

You should really get in contact with your ISP, but I presume that while you're not sending spam email, someone is using your address to and as a result they will probably still want to block it,

Toby is correct, they are just spoofing your email address for some bizzarre spamming purposes that us mere mortals cannot comprehend.

What mail client do you use, MS Outlook? Setup some custom message filters to delete all the "Returned mail" messages and any other associated mail. There's nothing you can do about the problem so just forget about it.

Latest NAV symantec uses less memory to operate.
I have used NAV for years and never had any virus problems.

It uses more resources, Ive had customers putting norton 2006 on their computers and it slows it down so much its almost unusable. We still put norton 2003 on new computers because its the best in terms of using resources

cheers folks, good karma to all of you, looks like i will either have to live with it or get ISP to change my email address. The reason I dont like Norton for my machine is because my PC isnt exactly an up to the minute all singing and dancing machine, and when im running some software like music recording software having norton running in the background upsets the sync for some reason also the norton I was running came with the disc i got with the machine so it would no doubt be hitting me with nag screens to upgrade by now - bless 'em!

Correct, except POP3 is for receiving mail from your mail server. I think you mean SMTP for sending mail Wink

Aye,

Tis all encompassed under the blank term Post Office Protocol though (Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not sure about this)

But yes, SMTP/25 for sending.

Used to have lots of fun in Telnet sending mail from the RIAA to my mates.

Negative - SMTP is purley for sending, pop3 is for recieveing...

If you telnet to a pop 3 server all you can do is recieve, if you telnet to an smtp server you can send https://www.yuki-onna.co.uk/email/smtp.html

My point was that the above wasn't infact the case.

You cannot use pop3 for sending! you could write a virus that contains a basic smtp server in it to connect straight to the pop3 server.

Normally when an SMTP server sends mail it will first check that the domain name exists so if i send something to [email protected] from [email protected] it would check firstly that madeupdomainname.com exists and has an MX record in it's dns (for info MX stands for Mail eXchange) if this record doesn't exists then a proper SMTP server should refuse to send and it should return an error ( for instance if the person recieving it's POP3 box is full their postmaster email address will return an error saying so.)

Generally the virus style smtp servers will ignore standards, they will quite happily send the mail anyway knowing that noone can recieve these errors back (cause it might even be the one that filled the inbox in the first place) on the other hand many viruses will scan the local machine for all the email addresses it can find and then send the virus onto all these people with another one of the emails it finds as the sender, that way the sender will generally have someone forward them the email with something like "Oi, stop sending me viruses Smile - been there, recieved them Smile"...

(And yes i am bored waiting for a couple of dvd's to burn so i can install windows vista Smile )
