Right, ive narrowed it down to two.

Honda XR125 or MZ SM

Im looking for one that looks nice, sounds nice and is reliable. Im not to botherd about speed, i am botherd about eccelitration though though i want to be nippy ^^ plus i am 6ft 3 i need one that will be bigger and not cramp me up.

Are these both 4 strokes? ive heard that the sound alot better than 2 strokes.

Also what is considered to be a resonable milage for the two of them?

I prefer the sound of 2 strokes, though a lot of people do like the 'tractor' sound of 4 strokes .
The 4 strokes will have a fair bit poorer acceleration.

I presume you're not intending to use majorish dual carrigeways?

The MZ is also a decent size. Seat height of 88cm or thereabouts. It'll drop quite a lot when you get on but even a six footer will have to stretch to throw their leg over it in the first place.

Sorry, no. It will be almost exactly the same as every other learner legal 125 though. (ie. 0-40 pretty quickly, 0-60 eventually).

Stinkwheel I see that you have an MZ supermoto from your webpage, are parts/dealers easy to come by? Also its a 4-stroker I suppose, do they have balance shafts etc i.e. vibes, not much?

Well i got a xr125, fairly nippy, but from 40mph onwards takes ages (like most 125 4-strokes).

I've now had the bike for almost 3 years, done 15,000 miles, with no problems, 2 chain and sprocket kits, 1 set of tyres (they were fairly square when i changed them at 12,000 miles, but not illigal), 1 set of front fork seals (down to abuse i think), replacement brake pads front and rear. Oh and a number plate bulb

Does 180miles to £7.50 in petrol!!

I'm 6ft and dont find it cramped, the seat isn't too bad either.

Mine was a 660cc one mind. I suppose a lot depends on how near your local dealer is and how good their reputation is, ask about. I had problems because the people I bought mine off were taken over by another bike shop in the same town, one that had a really shitty reputation for customer service which was borne out by my experiences with them.

I only had one other occasion when I needed parts and I got them direct from the importers, a company called BSA regal. Phoned in my order and they arrived two days later.

I'm not sure if they have a balancer shaft. Don't know if it is really all that important with a 125 single, mine had (and needed) a balancer, but the piston was five times the size of a 125 one.

I did have a good look at the 125 ones but I've never ridden one. What impressed me was the standard of finish and quality of the cycle-parts used. A lot of the bits (shocks, forks, brakes etc.) are made by well established specialist companies such as white power and grimecha, rather than having bits made in-house to indeterminate quality (if WP put their name on a shock, you know it is a quality item). Also something a bit different. If I was in the market for a newish, learner legal 125, the MZ ones would be at the top of my list.

I do think the Honda XR needs another 3-4bhp, but out fo your shortlist, id take the Honda i think. The reason being is that they are easy to get parts for, and the dealer network is much bigger. I don't know any MZ Dealers in the west mids, where i live. Im not sure how easy MZ's are to get hold of in other areas, but i do agree that it's the best bike. The 15bhp motor apparently allows it to just crack a genuine 70mph. This is more than the Honda, and it's likely to feel better to ride in terms of being more responsive. The XR is reasonably nippy to about 50mph, but maintaining higher speeds is hard work. There are a fair few 4stroke 125 trailbikes about now, but id avoid any of them that use the Yamaha TTR engine, as they have only 10.3bhp, and are too slow!

The man to talkto is Lilredmachine. I just bought his 125 sm from him, but have not yet had teh chance to ride it (picking it up tomo).

The size is great for my 6ft1 frame and the finish is excellent as Stinkwheel said.

Hopefully lilred will be on here soon to help you out. When looking at the honda XR 125, i found they were far too soft in the suspension department and the are not adjustable.
