Stealing from your own bike?

Let me spin you a dit before i ask my question

I had my bike stolen and then recovered a few days later. An insurance engineer came to look at it and decided it was a write off as the fairings and ignition block were baldy damaged. I have been offered a good amount for my bike, however...
I have some new anodized Pretech brake calipers fitted to it that were undeclared to my insurance company, and i want them.

So my question, can i strip the bike of these calipers or are they now doomed to be scrapped since i have accepted their offer?

I doubt it would be frowned upon (or even noticed) if you were to replace them with some standard ones.

When my car was declared 'written off' I took what I could. If it's a scrappie who's picking it up, they will probably not care as it means less for them to dispose of.

Of course, if you have fairing, remove them, take the engine then put them back on!

I feel egged on to dismantle my bike....is it taking the mickey if i remove my scorpion exhaust too?

A mate of mine wrote his bike off, and by the time the insurers came to remove it, all it was was smashed fairings, a frame and wheels. No exhaust no brakes no lights, no battery. They're not bothered so just remove everything that is OK!

Speak to the insurance asessor. They will often let you buy the wreck back for a small sum. Do a deal on the write-off value then ask how much if you keep the wreck too. You can then take the bits off that you want to keep and sell anyting else still useable on ebay. Bung the remainder in a skip somewhere.

From the insurance companies point of view, it saves them the transport and storage costs if they have to dispose of it.

how much do they normally charge is it a percent of the bike value or a standard fee? anyone know as it might be better just taking bits off if he can't make his money back on it.

Depends on the insurers, just bought my damage nc35 back from my insurers for 300 quid and all it has is cosmetic damage so if i broke it id have a full bike of parts to sell (not going to)

Just replace the aftermarket stuff with the OEM parts, otherwise they can (& will) offer you less money if parts are missing.

My bike was written off, they gave me £1600 and let me keep the bike for free (Actually I had to pay them to dispose of it), and then I sold the bike for a further £700

My gsxr400 was written off a few months ago, i removed loads (exhaust, fairings, downpipes even the braided brake lines). The bloke who came to collect the bike couldn't care less.

Just take the stuff off!!

When i had my destroyed nsr picked up i forgot id nicked the bolts of the exhaust.... as he put it on the truck it fell off on his foot

Ask what your insurance company want for your getting your bike back. Usually they let you have it back for a ridiculously cheap price, I bought my ER-5 back for £100 robbed a few bits and sold it for £200 because i didnt have the space to break it for parts. If you have the space youd usually be much better off buying the bike back and either selling it whole, repairing it, or breaking it for spares.

A similar thing occured when my NC30 was written off, although I had made the changes before the Insurance Inspector came around to view the bike. Sold the new top fairing, screen, fork springs, brake lines, pads and exhaust beforehand, so the bike was pretty stock when it was inspected. I got offered £500 extra in comparison to the bike's book price, but then again, the accident wasn't my fault and the bike's condition was slightly better than average...

I'd just take of bits that are easy to take off... ie not the engine!

Then say some kids must have come in te night and seen it was a wreck so pilliged it!

As long as theirs no CCTV they can't proof a thing!!!

Why buy it back if you don't need too...
