Olivershook Pass, heading to Durban. This road is an alternative to the main N3 toll road. Four hundred miles of tolls gets a little expensive and boring.

Wild Coast View. The wild coast is very rugged, they have more dirt roads than tar roads. The natives can get a little unfriendly down that way.

Dolphins playing in the surf. This is a once in a lifetime experience seeing this.

Port St Johns town, what a dump. This was the hangout for hippies in the 70's, the town has become a dos hole BUT.. There are some loverly resorts tucked behind high walls.
https://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c373/mmoorhouse/Cape%20Trip/119-1905_IMG.jpg

The old SA/Transkei border post. Its now a filling station and burger joint.
https://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c373/mmoorhouse/Cape%20Trip/OldTranskeiBorder.jpg

Checkout the name on the road sign… It makes me wonder what went on in this town ?

Early morning mist above George, we got soaked riding down through that lot.
https://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c373/mmoorhouse/Cape%20Trip/EarlymorningtheOuteniquaPass.jpg

R62 nr Oudtshoorn, some very nice roads and scenery.
https://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c373/mmoorhouse/Cape%20Trip/R62Oudtshoorn.jpg

Ronnies Sex Shop nr Barridale. Its not a sex shop but started as a roadside shop. the story is one of Ronnies chummies painted SEX on the wall and business boomed. Its now a restaurant, bar, and accommodation with no vibrators in sight.
https://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c373/mmoorhouse/Cape%20Trip/Ronnies.jpg

Port Elizabeth library. PE is a loverly city, I've spent many happy hours working down there.

When I go off on a trip it isn’t a case of getting from A to B, we avoid the main roads and freeways. The scenery is different, after all it is AFRICA, there can’t be many places left in Europe where you can get 80 miles between towns and just a couple of farms between them.

The best scenery I've ever seen is NZ South Island. I would love to do a long trip around Scotland, I did a couple in the younger days.

Scotland has definately some of the most varied and interesting scenery in the UK.

Europe is not (western) is pretty populated, but if you go east you get to see some beautiful places, with only small villages along the way. I'm hoping that will be my experience in Eastern Europe and Russia this year.

Croatia is largely unpopulated and unspoilt, but that is changing.

Do you happen to have any pictures of a small town near Durban called Mooiriver ? Thats where I come from and I have never seen it (except for pics from my family).

Mooi River eh !
Its just a fuel and burger stop on they to Durban, its not much of a town, most people bypass it on the freeway or stop at the Wimpy if your on the old road.

Its right at the end of a tourist route called the Midland Meander, this is a load of handicraft places strung along the old Durban road over 20-30 miles. We were down that way a couple of years ago and will post some pic’s a day or two.

Its quite close to the Drakensburg mountains that border Lesotho, its very scenic.

Take a look here….. https://www.midlandsmeander.co.za/midlands/index.html and take a look at the maps link

Great pics, in this and your other threads. The world is such a massive place, I wonder whether I will ever get to see it all!? Smile

Are motorcycles common out there, or are you a curiosity everywhere you go?

My Mum grew up in the shadow of the Drakensburg mountains, there are many pictures adorning our house of them. The area certainly is magnificent.

Great photos once again.

Yer mum will tell you the Natal Midlands is a very underrated tourist area. Most people zoom through it to Durban and back to Joburg.

For a few years I was regularly spending a month in Escort nr Mooi River while doing work for Nescafe’ coffee. You’ve got the Drakensburg mountains that everyone knows, but the battle fields from the Zulu and Boer wars are well worth looking at. Several towns were founded by Brits and the area is an island of Brit culture. Its gets pretty nippy in winter and several hotels run an Irish Christmas in June or July, almost like the real thing.

I’m hope to get some pic’s posted before the weeked, stay tuned.

I've got no pic's of Mooi River. The wife will be passing though this weekend to see chummies in Durbs. She'll whip straight past on the toll road so you're out of luck there.

Not too far away is a place called Golden Gate, its a real nice place to stop for a weekend especially if your into hiking.

Another shot of the Golden Gate area.

A Drakensburg shot taken a couple of years ago in winter. Notice how dry the grass is and check the snow on the mountains.

I didn't take this pic of a thunder storm in the berg. Its a cracker.

Thanks for those. We have a painting of the Drakensburg from a slightly different angle, but it is of a thunder storm passing. Its fantastic the way its so huge that you can get the blinding sunlight with the black shadow of the thunder storm in the same frame. Absolutely awesome.
