Lacquer over bare steel?

I was just wondering what the score is with this.

I have a ratty old petrol tank that i'm in the process of cutting back ready for painting. But, I'm interested in the idea of taking it all back the the bare metal and having it professionally lacquered. I'm not after a highly polished finish, more of a natural bare metal sort of thing.

Is this possible? Getting it to the bare metal isn't a problem, as a large area has already been done in preperation for the planned paint. I'm more concerned with if the lacquer will protect the bare steel enough from possible rust.

I think you may need a specific lacquer for it. My advice is to contact a metalwork shop or professional spray shop to see what lacquer they use. It should protect it as well as paint does. Can't think of any reason it shouldn't.

My thoughts too were that the laqcuer should protect the steel the same way normal paint does. But you don't see it done very often. The last time I noticed it, it was on a mountain bike trials frame that had been lacquered over the bare steel frame. It was tatty and discoloured under the lacquer but it looked really good. (This was a production frame btw, not a custom build).

I'm going to give it go, if it goes tits up, I'll just get it sprayed with paint anyway Thumbs Up

i polished an sprayd my front forks with just normal lacquer from halfords,,, seemed todo the trick its not flaked at all an can hardly even tell its ther, forks looks just as good as when i polished them.

done it about 3months ago. front does have a few white spots wer stones have hit the front of them but stil look good..

laquer usually sticks to things like shit to a blanket but I'm not sure how well it will stick if you polished the tank first but as its just the bare metal i think it should be ok. I wouldn't aerosol the tank because of petrol spillage but as you have said it's gonna be proper job it will be ok.

Just do it get some pics and show us what it looks like.so we can do it to Laughing
