Won't Shut Up

The VFR is still in my lock up, she wont run, I’ve had her looked at by a mechanic but he reckons the electrical problem is well over his head.
The other guy who was meant to pick it up called me to say his missus had a miscarriage, so work is not on the cards, which is fair enough.

My insurance is still running, they think the bike is still worth £2500....

One problem. You'd screw your NCB and probably not be able to insure the ZX7R come renewal time.

Electrical problems are often over mechanics heads, the electrical part of my mechanics course was so poor that I ended up teaching part of it (I'm a leccy engineer).

The problem these days with mechanics (especially car ones) is that all they do for electrical problems is to plug in a diagnostic box and then replace the part it tells them to replace. Often the problem is solvable.

get the pannels off it, head to the scrappy and get a new loom and CDI.

Failing that, i'd recomend napalm, or a nice mixture of propan1,2,3triol and nitrous acid, depending on incendiary/explosive qualities desired.

I beg to differ Sir.
Electrical problems are SOMETIMES over SOME mechanics heads. Laughing

If there is no spark then the ECM is faulty.
Only need to ensure it is getting a 12V supply and good grounding.
If supply etc. is OK then the ECU has a problem.
Which would be over some electrician's heads too Laughing

You could leave it outside your house unlocked.

You don't get your hands dirty.

They won't know it's a non runner until they've smashed the ignition barrel, dropped it etc...

even easier, is polystyrene dissolved in petrol, with a dash of benzine. almost exact same properties as napalm Very Happy

There could be loads more problems. If you havn't got a spark you need to check your spark plug, plug cap resistance, HT lead, primary and secondary windings in the coils... loads of stuff before you blame it on the ECM/ECU.

Your one of those people that replaces and expensive black box when it was a faulty plug cap or something! Razz

Of course before forking out for an ECU you'd have done that.....
But if a mechanic doesn't know how to do that then he is not a friken mechanic is he? Laughing

im glad i dont have a honda 400, they all seem to get electrical problems

how about just replacing the wiring loom 2 on ebay at about a tenner each ?

You'd be surprised. I've stopped a mechanic in a main dealer from attaching a battery negative terminal first before now, he was just about to attache the positive when I pointed out that he was about to send a nice voltage spike through the bike's electrics.

I have also seen bodges like you would not believe on alarms and heated grips. The Varadero I (briefly) owned a while back needed the whole lighting circuit rewiring because of heated grips fitted by a Honda mechanic.

I was generalising when I said that electrical problems are often over mechanics heads but there are a scary number of mechanics out there who don't have a clue when it comes to the sparky stuff.

Nah your completely right.

I worked at VW for a year, and during that year i was offered the chance to become their "Electrical Expert" on premises because none of the others had the faintest idea, apart from the Master Tech who was too important to do stuff on normal cars Wink

Your completely right about the computer too, most will throw that on and if that doesnt come up with a problem, its a quick check for blatent wires hanging down around the rough area and then its "Nah cant fix it, we need more investigation time, get the master tech on it"... was pathetic realy. I knew more than them and i had just started...

I mean im no expert on electrics, but i would suggest getting the pannels off and taking a quick look. You know what an engine needs to run, check you have a spark first, then just trace it back, use a V/M if you need.

The worst thats gona happen is that you end up in the same position your at now, but with the knowlege its not something you can fix. Thumbs Up
