PostPosted: 23:40 - 24 May 2006    Post subject: Exhaust System without BS stamp Reply with quote

Hay peps, need some tech help...

My imported Pegaso 125 has an Italien stock Exhaust system on, so as you would guess no BS (British Standard Stamp)...

Its quieter than alot of BS stamped Systems and alot quieter than the 50cc Death traps...

Can i get it stamped if correctly tested, or do i need to get a BS stamped system?

It's an MOT failure without the stamp, so would they let it through if its quiet enough?

But then if the cops dont see one they tend to stop you riding...

Im a little confuzed, so all you mechanics or MOT teters please help, or anyone else that knows :p

BTW, i havent been riding it on the road, so i havent been breaking the law, lol.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, it will only fail an MOT if it's got "not for road use" or something along those lines written on it or if the exhaust is too loud.

You dont need a BS mark on silencer to pass the MOT

You do need a makers mark of some sort so that if the tester wants to he can check that the silencer is suitable for the machine, as specified by the manuyfacturer, but he'll only do this if the silencer is thought to be excessively noisy.

You cant have a silencer marked "For track use only"

as your silencers are stock equipt you wont have aproblem as long as theyre not excessively noisy.

Full explanation here if you want to read the testers manual

https://www.motuk.co.uk/mcmanual_620.htm

hope this helps

Hi

It is not an MOT fail (used to be). Now if it is not stamped then it is up to the MOT testers opinion as to whether it is quieter than a standard exhaust in reasonable condition.

However, passing an MOT does not actually mean it is legal! And your Arrow exhaust, while not likely to be that loud (the Arrow silencer we had on a Cagiva Freccia was quieter than the stock silencer) it was not really designed to be legal.

And you need to connect up your speedo cable before the MOT Wink .

All the best

Keith

are you allowed to have a "not for road use" or similar stamped exhaust on a pre 1985 bike? (1985 being when noise regs came in)

Hi

Probably not. The noise regulations still applied before then, just not the rules on BS stamps.

All the best

I got the BS stamp being an MOT req. from a mechanic whos been out of it for a while with 30 years of his own business under his belt, but i think in the time hes been out of it has left his knowlage slightly out of date :p ...

Another problem is that speedo cable, lol, becuase im struggling with finding the correct part... Its the thread on the wheel side thats missing i think, but ive been told a whole new cable and connection set is needed, help on that would be great too hehe ...

BTW, how'd u know it was arrow?

**EDIT:**

Im guessing my pics are a givaway, i forgot they were there, got them mem of a gold fish Wink lol

Hi

Speedo drive is part number 81 02 030, price £29.56+vat.

Speedo cable is part number 81 14 186, price £10.11+vat.

Prices from https://www.aprilia-spares.com/order.php

A silencer is part number 81 19 202, but no longer seems to be a valid part number.

All the best

Keith

Hi

The male thread at the wheel end is part of the speedo drive, with the female thread being part of the speedo cable.

Yes it is a Pegaso 125. Part numbers come from the 1989 Pegaso 125 parts list I have.

All the best

Keith

Hi

Part numbers do work, but drop the spaces (spaces are given in the parts list, but do not seem to be used online).

All the best

Thanks god u said 1989, because alot of insurance co. who even bother to have the pegaso 125 listed only seem to have there dates at 92-98 ...

And stamped under me seat is 230390 which i translated as 23rd of the 3rd 1990, as i could find any date stamp anywhere else, lol ...

Also, where can i get hold of the parts list?

Thanks.

Hi

I bought it on Ebay. Have a bad habit of buying Aprilia parts lists. I can try and scan it at some point for you.

Aprilia had the 125 Pegaso on their stand at the 1989 UK bike show.

If you need engine spares use Peter Knight on 0176 141 4106 ( https://www.rotax.co.uk ).

All the best

Hi

No scanner hooked up at the moment, so it will be a week or 2 probably.

What bits do you need and I will find the part numbers for you.

All the best

Hi

Chain and sprocket set I would not buy from Aprilia. Ring someone like B&C Express. If you really want them from Aprilia then the rear sprocket is part number 81 25 530 (£24.37) and the chain 81 07 053 (not listed anymore). Front sprocket is in the engine manual.

Which fairing pieces? Note that plastics are generally hideously expensive for any bike. Parts list I have covers the black bikes and the red bikes, and the part numbers will be different for your grey bike.

Left hand switch gear is 81 12 330 (£123+vat).

Rear brake light lense (assume that is the bit you mean) is 81 12 633 (£13.27).

All the best

Keith

If its original equipment it won't have and doesn't need a BS stamp, only aftermarket parts require that.

Unfortunatly it isn't the stock system. It is an aftermarket Arrow silencer.

All the best

Hay there, didnt realise Aprilia nparts were soo much...

Dont worry about the Fairings anymore, i might just sand em down and get it sprayed up.

As to the switch its only the little peice that stick out, that the rider pushes left and right for the direction on/off ...

The the front sproket, i dont have the engine manual either Embarassed lol ...

I'll get onto B&C, are there any other co. you advise?

Thanks alot,

Luke.

Hi

Not certain but I suspect the front sprocket is the same at the one used on the RS125. Take the front sprocket cover off and count the number of teeth. With that and knowing it is a Rotax 123 engine you should be able to source a front sprocket easily.

The button is not listed seperatly. Unfortunatly they do snap fairly easily, although very similar switchgear was used on loads of late 80s / early 90s Italian bikes, so you might be able to find the actual switch cheaply from a breakers. Note that the wiring will probably be different for any alternative sources of the same switch.

Those prices are not too bad to be honest compared to other makers.

All the best

Keith

Ive been running my current sproket and chain set but they looking a little egg shapped, so it think its time for a new one
