hi folks just put new brushes in the starter on my bike and put it all back together earthed, positive on properly etc made sure contacts were clean and working via mulimeter but the starter will not turn. the magnets are in good condition too cant figure this out. thought possibly could be windings but have two motors and other set wont rotate either. the battery has been checked too all lights etc give good power and i can hear the relay clicking when i try to turn over. put straight across battery too but with no avail?????? the green wire is onto the chasis of the motor and effectively in contact with the chassis of the bike and red wire registers voltage.

Three things you need to checK:

1. Battery can supply enough current (don't count on bright lights to tell you that this is the case)

2. Starter solenoid lets enough current flow.

3. Wiring is intact.

To check 1, either:
a. Pull the starter motor out so it is not under load and see if it runs with the existing battery
b. Connect the starter motor directly to a known good battery.
If motor spins, then the battery is borked.

To check 2., connect the starter +ve directly to the battery +ve using a jump lead. Motor spins? that means the starter solenoid probably has burnt contacts. Perhaps you can clean it up, perhaps you need a new one.

To check 3, check that a voltage appears across the starter motor terminals - i.e. don't just check 12V appears on the +ve terminal with respect to the bike frame, actually use the -ve terminal of the starter motor as your ground. Could be the ground connection is bad.

Usually, this kind of thing is down to the battery.
