Hi,

I'm thinking of buying a motorbike. I quite like what I think are called choppers or low riders (I've no idea what I'm on about with bikes). It's a bit like the T2 bike that Arnie has, with the laid back seat and the long sort of handle bars.

Anyway, a couple of things beyond that. I'm not really bothered about it being that fast, if it can do 70-80 for motorways, that'd be fine.

Also, I'd quite like to have an English bike, and maybe an old one ... do we even make bikes in this country any more?

So, what am I looking at spending, and what sort should I look for? I can't really spend more than £2,000.

Are you just into a bit of mutual masturbation, or are you a full-on, do-me-up-the-arse ghey?

Is this a polite way of saying that you may have found the wrong forum?

Hmm ... maybe I should have just asked about money. How much do you need to spend on a bike to get something that isn't a piece of shit?

I googled it and got this:

https://dudamobile.starcarstn.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.starcarstn.com%2FT2_Harley.html#2684

I can't pretend to know much about Harley's, so I don't know if the Fatboy is a special variant of the Softail model, but autotrader suggests you're looking at a hefty price tag:

You can't afford Arnie's bike. You could afford an XVS650 Dragstar which looks a bit like it if you squint and drop acid.

Do you hold a full motorcycle licence or a provisional?

I need your clothes, your boots and your anal virginity.

Cruisers are underpowered, bad handling, overweight pieces of chrome. They are for boosting your "bad man" image and for rolling to the local breakfast bar to look well 'ard.

What you want is Johns motorcycle.

You're going to need to spend ~£1K of that on training, tests and gear. If you're in any way serious, book your motorcycle theory test and a CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) course with a local training school and get the ball rolling.

Cruisers hold their value (i.e. are over valued) and a £1K (or even £1500) budget will leave you begging, not choosing.

You won't get a running classic for that, or a Triumph America, or any sort of Harley.

So you are looking at a ratty Yamaha Virago of some description: 535, 750. Ignore the 250.

A 4 stroke crosser, with a 2 stroke engine skillfully fitted, then made to run with no expansion chamber.

Yeah, that one Laughing

If your looking for something British (or English as you put it) then have a look at triumphs, they do cruisers which can be modded into choppers if your really into that thing.

On a tight budget? Ebay is your friend but just to reiterate what Rogerborg says don't expect shiny ones.

And maybe joining a forum specifically for cruisers/choppers, some people find it offensive here lol.

Somewhat more accurately, some people here seem to feel the need to be offensive about it.

The first question here would be, do you have a bike licence and if so, what sort? If not, how old are you?

I didn't realise some people didn't like these sorts of bike. I think I've heard Harley's were frowned upon because of reliability though?

I haven't got a licence, and I'm 32.

I don't mind I suppose if it doesn't look all new and shiny, stuff that's rough around the edges has it's own charm.

Wee if you're 32, you'll be able to do direct access so a big cruiser is potentially on the cards.

I'd suggest test first, then you'll have a much better idea of how the different types of bike ride.

They are relatively heavy, tend to have a slow top speed for their displacement, and aren't the most manoeuvrable of bikes.

https://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/4834_20100406191128_L.jpg

There is also a bit of an issue with some cruiserists who are more interested in being seen and heard and hanging around with other sweaty men in leather than in actually riding the things.

https://i.imgur.com/8IUGmFq.jpg

But, not every biker is in it for speed or nailing it through tight bends. You could call my Enfield slow, lardy and dynamically limited, and it is, but it still puts an immense grin on my face. So if you want a cruiser, get a cruiser.

That wouldn't concern me much these days. I wouldn't have a Polaris (Victory or Indian) bike though.

OK, are you clear that to get a bike license you have to jump through quite a few hoops:

Arrow Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course to validate your motorcycle provisional entitlement. £100 - £150.
Arrow Motorcycle theory test. Yes, even if you've had a car license for decades. £31.
Arrow Module 1 off road test, on a 595cc+ bike making 40kW+ (which in practice you'll do via a training school, and not on a cruiser). £15.50 plus a substantial amount in training and bike hire fees.
Arrow Module 2 off road test, on a 595cc+ bike making 40kW+. £75 + training and hire.

It adds up pretty quickly and you'll want to take care to find a decent instructor rather than Shouty McRant.

But it is all worth it in the end when you're finally done with it and can go and buy and enjoy whatever bike you like. It really is ace.

I've just got my full licence and it added up to quite a bit.

£580 for cbt, mod 1 and 2 and all training (and that was cheapest I could find by me by quite a bit)
£30 ish for theory
These could be hired but I didn't want to wear something 100s have worn before me!...
£50 for new helmet as mine had bs sticker which I was told was out of date now
£150 for jacket and boots

Expect some ghey cruiser jokes, but definitely get whatever bike will make you happiest, it really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

However, test ride a few bikes, see what style you like, I'm really tempted to get into supermoto style of bikes, but at the same time want a blade! I honestly would like to own at least 1 bike from most categories, even including a cruiser at one point (probably above 55 years old however).

If you can handle the mild banter about it, it's certainly worth staying on this forum, we have quite a few clued up cruiser riders so you certainly wont be the first Thumbs Up
