Ahhh, I see where I went wrong now...just watched some of Luke's helmet cam footage...I would have lost time on my mega slides. There were two places on the circuit, where I slid each time...hence my best score only being 0.32.437.
Perhaps if I wasn't having such fun going sideways, I would have got a better run!!!
Next time, please remind me to bring cushioning for my back...I've got the mother of all whopping great big bruises on my pelvis/hip bone!!! ____________________ Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter won't mind - Dr. Seuss |

Cool vid luke
Still can't work out quite what to do in the kart to go faster, obviously going sideways less , but how to do that I couldn't quite implement.
Was reading some karting technique guides last night, I must not be tuned to racing speak because it all sounded a bit muddled to me.
I assume its some kind of slower is faster thing. One guide made mention of keeping the steering wheel as near to straight as much of the time, which sounds like it might make sense.

Clanger - I did about the same the first time I did karting - just had fun sliding everywhere with not so great lap times - though that lap time you got isn't bad at all for your first time in them.
covdude - I've done the twin engine karts too, they suck also. Outdoors is a bit of a risk at this time of year - last year the weather was terrible. If you want fast, get a 125 (or if you want /really/ fast 500cc) race kart, hire ones are made to be slow because you've got idiots like us driving them!
Was the stuff you were reading for 'hire' karts goose? The fact that they've got lazy auto engines from a generator means the power delivery isn't quite the same as a 'real' kart I suspect - can probably be on full throttle a lot more on these.
However, yes, good lines generally keep you straight as possible apart from turn in. Furthermore, presumably you're going to get least resistance with the wheels straight.
Years ago now, did it with some work people, on of which raced. None of could get near his corner speed with the same karts. I tried everything - slow in fast out, fast in slow out etc, etc and just couldn't make the kart go around the corner nearly as quickly as him (including moving body etc).
We didn't have the 'proper' races I had previously been promised. But then I'd said more people would turn up and I didn't hassle them as much as I have done other years.
Oh and sorry I was a bit dead everyone, what with five hours of sleep an all I only started waking up towards the end . |

Just seemed a tad slower than i recall, but its a video and last time i done it was a few years back now ...
What about off roading, i think you call it green laneing, sure that loads of road riders would love a off road session ... ? .. except dunc as he's always going of the road ...

Goose
I know where I lose out is on the slow corners. Just can't get my speeds right and land up sliding too much from going too quick, or just over braking. And at that track there are 2 slow corners for me to make a mess of.
Also on the long right I struggled with the kart I was in to use full throttle the whole way round. Take the shallowest line I could and on full throttle the back end was slipping enough to put me into the tyres at the end of the bend (and did at least once).
All the best

Ive done quite a bit of outdoor karting, i think its quite a bit harder than indoor, indoor you reach the limit of grip really easy, the hardest part is to make the most of the grip you got.
Outside you have more grip, and its alot more about taking the right lines etc.
I did an outdoor competition and got mugged of first when the driver behind clipped and span me out of 1st place, ended up about 15th or something in the end
Thats the bad thing about a proper grid race, although i personally find it more fun. ____________________ Ducati 1299 Panigale

Just thought I'd let you all know that I FINALLY got home safe just a few minutes ago.
So just to recap over the two days for me that was a total of;
395 miles, or 15 hours of A roads or £20 of petrol on my CG. I have faced many tribulations and gotten lost a great number of times but all in all I can definitely call it my most epic ride so far
I'd also like to echo my sentiments that meeting all of you was absolutely amazing. Karting was fun but I had no idea that my first time on a mini moto would feel as spectacular as it did. I really didn't want it to end once I found myself throwing myself in to corners violently enough to occasionally lowside. Special thanks to G for letting me collapse at his place half way.
Finally I feel that it is my duty to inform you after my many trials that the A342 is the longest road in the world, the A272 the most treacherous, the A4 in certain parts the most beautiful and finally, finally the south circular is the pit of Satan that will now be avoided by me at all costs in the future.
Peace out. ____________________ will never give up his CG. I look at my fuel gauge more as a progress bar than a fuel gauge.

I've always been up for Karting at Thurxton
https://www.thruxtonkarting.co.uk/Default.aspx
13 Bhp top speed of 55 MPH, I reckon the karts we were using were about 5Bhp.
The tracks 900m long with a lap record of 49s, I dont know if thats in their karts or any kart, suspect we would do nearer just sub 1 mins.
I may bum down with my helmet cam at some point for an arrive and drive see what its like. ____________________ Flounced - Long overdue

If im honest mate, YOU are the only guy i can ever think of that really REALLY uses the CG for what its for, quality long distance problem free travelling!
Props for doing such a massive distance on £20.. i think it would have cost me...easy £35-£40.. and 7 hours of riding, from 2am...that is MENTAL!!! but massive respect init!
bet that was cold.. |
