Because you don't strip a tank and ultrasonic clean the cards unless there is a problem.

Is it not done as an annual maintenance thing?

Appreciate the replies btw!

I dunno. Some people have some wasteful views on maintenance.

The guy I got it from said he just rode them and had the bikes picked up to be serviced, that’s the reason I asked.

So maybe the guy was being milked by his guy. Who knows.

Seeing as I feel a bit sorry for OP here I thought I'd add a further 2p (despite his prior insults of my attempts to help him).

So, Suzukis seem to have this really annoying issue - Not related to rust in the tank, or carb problems or electrical problems.

They have this little filter that sits *inside* the fuel pump assembly which could well be described as a tea bag filter. I found this out to my cost when my GSX-S1000F decided it didn't want to go above 3000rpm. Turns out this pesky little filter just goes bad after time. Not blocked per se, not full of gunk but it shrinks, turns black and looks literally like a used teabag. I had to remove the tank on my GSX-S, which annoyingly needs the fairing off, some of the trim around the ignition switch and seat unit and a bunch of other gubbins. It's a massive pain in the backside. On the GSX-R it should be a lot easier. I then had to turn the tank upside down, remove the fuel pump assembly, dismantle it and replace the filter with a new filter. The effort was much more than the parts, as the part was twelve quid off of ebay.

No issue with injectors, no issue with the tank (although I did spot some spots of rust on the underside) and no issue with icing as it's injected.

Once the filter was replaced, the bike ran absolutely fine again.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

It looks like the saga may be coming to an end.. but with my luck I doubt it.

Apparently the kit turned up and they’ve installed it.. and from what I can gather.. and don’t quote the shop on this..

they’ve used a mini light to check all the nooks and crannies and found dirt bunging up places that it shouldn’t. (Despite several sonic cleaning cycles)
Having been on the side stand for 18 years give or take 1000 miles without defuelling has furred up said nooks and crannies especially down the number 1 side (presumably that’s the side stand reference) which they have now cleaned. (Shouldn’t they have checked this the last time?)

Anyway.. I had quick listen (not that I know what to listen for) and it sounded a lot better, choked and idling. And they want to road test it from cold to see what’s what.

And now..

They’re waiting for the chainhugger and two tyres to turn up (road 4s thanks for the recommendation) then they’re going to wash it and stick everything on and then we should be good to go.

——

They’ve got £1800 on my account and they’ve said I can expect change but how much, I don’t know.

——

If you want to leave some guesses down below, it’ll be interesting to see if you experts (more experienced than me) can get anywhere close

Bear in mind, previous to all this, they’d had £167 out of me to tell me that I’d run out of juice.. so you can exclude that bit of the saga from the final total.

Their labour is £70 an hour.

Thermistors £12
Teabag filter £35.
Chain hugger £135
Fuel pump rebuild kit £128
2 Road 4s £387 fitted.
£95 pair of goretex gloves
£70 bike cover.

All the work / gloves / cover up to last week was just under £900.
Fire away!

Wow! I'd be expecting road 6 and a happy ending for that money. You can pick 4s up for around 200 a pair.

Where from? They get their tyres from Cambrian (looking over the SD shoulder)

My bad. 200 plus vat. But if you know where to look, you'd get a pair fitted for under 300. This time of year they're are plenty of deals around. Pro tyre are good and 6s are about 320 fitted. Bt32s are a lot cheaper and very similar.
