You get spam if your email address is anywhere that can be seen by bots (programs) trawling the 'net looking.

And if you sign up to dodgy porn sites then you're just saving them the effort of having to find your email.

We get such bad spam that we've signed up to trial a McAfee 'on-line' spam catcher. Basically it sits between our email server and office server, and weeds out all the rubbish. It's very expensive! I get about 150 spam emails a day, so on a Monday it's a nightmare wading through all the rubbish. It's not from surfing porn sites but from having a 'visible' presence on the internet, with the same email address for 10 years!

I use good old yahoo mail. It's free, not isp based and does a fantastic job of filtering out all the crap.

I always set my mail servers up with exim, spamassassin and sa_exim to boot the spammers off during the smtp transaction rather than after the damage has already been done. I also sign up to all the top relay blacklists and regularly feed ham and spam to spamassassin to keep the bayesian filters in shape.

A lot of spam seems to get sent from trojaned windows machines that are quietly used to send the stuff out without the user's knowledge. If you've ever had a windows box trojaned, then chances are you're a spammer yourself.

I get so much now from my business account that I now have a whitelist!

I keep getting jpg spam, where the title and body is normal random words and the spam is a jpg image!

You people give out your email addresses to freely. Mine is a standard Hotmail account which I've had for a good 2 years, and I get no spam whatsoever. Well, I get about 30 emails a day from Freecycle Somerset, but that's only because I joined and forgot my password, so I can't unsubscribe. I currently have 715 unread messages. 100 of them are eBay threatening legal action, and the rest are Freecycle.

But other than that, I get virtually no spam mail. I can't remember having a penis enlargement email etc for years.
