The government, the rail network, buses and all the other *unts want us from our bikes and cars

But then they do this: https://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-2475462,00.html

wtf? Hydrogen is a few years off in cars.. I don't have a clue when we'll have hydroden fuelled bikes..

Riding is seriously going to yet bloody expensive in the years to come.

hmm..not sure where this rant is going but wtf is the solution? We can't be seriously paying more.. I will barely be able to afford it now, nevermind getting the fucking bus

125's and old rat bikes aside, running a bike is about the same as running a car so yes bikes are expensive to run and always will be.

They are petrol vehicles and petrol is getting more expensive. Motorcycles will naturally be hit by any price increases. However they don't cause congestion and can only carry 1 person with any ease. They don't therefore burn any fuel unnecessarily and so are viewed as far greener than cars.

Councils are starting to see the sense in encouraging bikes as part of their 'green' policies. Mainly because it costs them very little to actually implement any requirements for them. Simply removing a few car park spaces, paint MC on the floor and stick in a few metal hoops is all that's required. Total cost is tiny compared with say buying a whole fleet of greener buses, yet as far as keeping the 'greenies' happy the effect is the same.

So granted motorcycling will never be any cheaper, it will at least get more convenient.

I'd move to suggest that the majority of bikes are run with the simple objective of leisure in mind - burning fuel for fun.

Anyone who actually knows anything about motorcycles (probably not the majority of legislators then Rolling Eyes ) knows that they are generally less fuel efficient than many/ most modern cars. The only significant advantage I can think of is their size , which cuts down on congestion when the traffic is stationary - hence they burn less fuel in many situations in cities/ towns.

Bikes are about performance, not fuel economy (yes, people complain about litre V-twins and Hornets not having a good tank range, but that's just because the tank is too small, not because they're worried about the pollution). Cars headed west as far as the emphasis on performance goes a long time ago.

sports bikes are about performance
commuter bikes are about fuel economy

either way bikes are more fuel efficient than a car of similar performance

ok a sports 600 may do 33mpg which isnt much better than a family car, but its a damn sight better than the lamborgini you would need to keep up with a sports 600

i think 125 is a bit small, but 250 is about perfect for practical transport in town, anything bigger is just for fun

well the future will not be just one fuel many people argue, fuels such as bioethanol could replace petrol with a few modifocations to internal combustion engines. And would be 40% more powerful (though i cant find the research to back this).

In fact most engines could run of 5% bioethanol now which would mean saving 80million tonnes of petrol a year (the 95% would still be petrol/diesel) but this is not being implicated. Rolling Eyes

Bioethanol is manufactured from wheat, sugar beet and many others depending on what the country is best growing due to history and envoirnment (for example india use molasses).

The concern with bioethanol is that it will increase the amount of CO2 that is released into the envoirnment but then again no fuel is perfect

Green Spirit Fuels plan to be producing 700,000 tonnes of bioethanol by 2012 which is projected at ~70% of the markets need. They have recently won Best Business Inovation

It is reabsorbed by the next batch of crops so the CO2 release is irrelevant. Carbon neutrality is a great thing.
