Respray? Solid or metalic?

Im looking to re-spray my Cbr 400. (its in primer atm)
and i can afford a professional job, So i was wondering, Would Matelic or solid Colour paint be best to hide any small imperfections in a amuture spray job???

its not so much wether its metalic or solid colour but you will find lighter colours will generally not show imperfections as much as darker colours

I disagree, the darker the colour the more it will hide any imperfections. About the hardest colour to paint is metallic silver, that is because any tiny imperfections in the prep work will be highlighted.

A solid colour is better too for hiding imperfections, because the paint is a one straight colour and you can flat and polish it to remove the sharpness to the eye of minor imperfections lurking underneath. Once a metallic colour is sprayed over dodgy prep work it will never lie flat and once the clear topcoat is applied you are stuffed. You can't do anything about it, all you can do is flat and polish the lacquer and that will not remove any dodgy marks in the prep work cos they are under the basecoat.

How do I know all of this? Because I cut my teeth doing it for a living at one time.

If so, then a solid colour might be better to go for.

I'm having my bike resprayed at the moment. I was given the option for solid/gloss/matt or metallic, i opted for matt black with lacquer because it looks stealthier.

Metallic looks tarty. Matt & solid colours look bold yet understated . Also, get somebody else that knows their stuff to do it. Prepwork DOES take a substantial amount of time. Skimp on this, and people WILL find out. you want a 3 foot minter, well, if you forget to preheat the oven before you stick in the turkey, you'll be left with a 30 foot minger, and that's from personal experience when i spent just under 48 hours prepping and painting my bike!

If you are doing it yourself, I guess you will be doing it a bit at a time, in which case, definitely go for the solid colour. The hardest part with metallic paint is getting a consistent finish unless you keep absolutely everything the same, which is almost impossible in bloke-in-shed world.

Using cans it's particularly hard because the pressure when you start a tin is different to when you finish it.

For cheap, easy to paint and also easy to rectify any problems, you can't beat white. Not to everybody's taste, but I think black and white or white with fancy burgundy bits makes a great looking bike.

I presume in the original post you mean't to say you can't afford a professional job?

If so, then metallic rattle-can work always looks poor. I'm not a big fan of metallic bike paint anyway.

Its one of the worst time of year to be doing a shed respray, the humidity is way too high.

Are you planning a spray can or a compressor and gun?

Generally its the shine in a spray job that shows the imperfections so white is pretty good at hiding minor stuff since its hard to get a high gloss finish.

Go with the metallic, aslong as you are going to be patient. Im currently spraying my fairings (which were originally smashed/scratched to peices) metalic black. However its due a repsol Vinyl kit to distract/cover imperfections aswell so i wont worry.

Oh yeah its a CBR400 im spraying aswell This is the final colour on the first fairing ive sprayed, the rest of them are just primed for now as ive no time between school/work!
