That all depends.

Are you using ADSL, or Cable (Broadband)?

You can buy ADSL Routers, Cable Routers and Routers.

IF yous is the 1st or 2nd type, you remove your modem and replace with the router and yes, you will need to reconfigure it. If it is the 3rd type, you need to keep your modem connected.

All the info will be with the paperwork your ISP gave you when you purchased the line.

It also depends if your router has a built in modem. If the cable from the phone socket fits into a socket on the back of your router then you are away; as long as you haven't got an Ethernet router and a no Ethernet card in your PC.

Easy init. Wink

Edit - Oh and you'd need to know your ISP connection details such as username, password and VCI.

that's very similar to the one I'm currently using on ntl broadband. The build quality is rather bad and it seems to randomly crash whenever the upstream bandwidth picks up so I end up having to regularly reset the router when I'm grabbing torrents. This particular one looks slightly newer though, so I'm guessing they might have fixed that issue.

I'm pretty sure that this particular router won't replace your modem. If you're on cable broadband, then your modem should have a patch cable or a usb cable that leads out of the modem and into your computer. Assuming you're using patch cable, then you just plug it into the uplink port of the router and switch it on then configure the router through the web browser ( https://192.168.2.1/ by default)

hmm.. I've checked the specifications for the router and it doesn't have usb. First thing I'd do is check if your modem has an rj45 port on it (most have). Also assuming your computer has a network adaptor of some sort then you can get a piece of patch cable to connect up the modem to the router then another piece of patch cable to connect up the router to your computer.

If your modem doesn't have anywhere to plug patch cable into it, then you can either replace it with a dsl modem/router or else get a usb-to-ethernet dongle to adapt the usb output from the modem to the rj45 input of the router.

If you reckon all that might be too much hassle and you haven't bought the router yet, then you can try shopping round for a dsl router that accepts usb input

This is another gateway it won't replace your modem you will have to use a compatible modem and more than likely have to use a CAT5 network cable from this to an Ethernet card in your PC.

You would be better with THIS.

you can swap it with the modem which means you'll need to configure it to log in to your current broadband account. I reckon you'd have an easier time just plugging the usb from the modem into the router and taking the network off of that.
If your modem has somewhere to plug a patch cable, then you might have a few more options

It would be easier to do it that way but you could really do with finding out your details from your ISP. If your machine goes tits up and needs rebuilding for some reason you'd be scuppered.

ok, this makes sense now. Can you comfirm whether your computer(s) have network interfaces? Assuming they do, you have two options:

1. get a dsl router with usb input

you get a product similar to the belkin that has usb input, then plug the usb lead from your old modem into the router.

2. get a replacement dsl modem/router

this will replace the modem supplied by you broadband provider. You'll need to configure the modem to log to your broadband account using the details provided by your ISP.

The BT voyager would allow you to take either option. As dainesefreak mentioned, it's probably best that you unplug the old dsl modem and configure the new one. This will be more much more hassle than simply uplinking a router to the existing modem, but it'll mean that you've got your connection details to hand in the event of any problems and you'll also be using one component rather than two which halves your chances of having a component fail.

Your ISP should have sent you your username and password in the welcome pack and I'm fairly sure you would have been prompted for the details when the connection was first set up. If you don't have them, then you'll need to contact your ISP

Right the basics, the modem - modulator/demodulator is the bit that converts the signal from your DSL line into something that the PC understands and vice versa. In theory this is all you need.

A router as a separate entity does exactly what it says on the tin, it splits the signal from a single line in to 4/8/12/16 or however many ports you've got; so that you can plug in multiple machines to use the same line. It will dedicate the same line speed to each machine rather than sharing the line speed amongst the ports like a hub.

You usually find a modem/router unit is the easiest way to go as it's a single solution without having to plug a separate modem into a separate router. DSL routers will generally provide you with some sort of Firewall such as NAT. A modem gives no Firewall protection and you will usually have to use a software solution.

There are obviously many different variations around this and these are only the basics, but they apply here.

right the only problem is that ive already bought that router that doesnt have the usb slot so i was wondering if there is a connector that will change usb into a connector that will fit my router (i think its rj45?)

if im keeping the same modem and just adding a router will the settings need to be configured?

Agreed just get a wireless ADSL Router.

just one more little detail - if you opted for the bt voyager, then you wouldn't need a separate wireless access point - it already comes with wireless network

No the modem will still use a dial-up that contains your details, the router will just split the line.

Edit - converters on Ebay for a couple of quid. RJ45 to USB.

No it isnt.

Thats a USB to Ethernet adaptor and will not connect to your modem in any way shape or form.

sorry, that one in the last pic had the connectors the wrong way round. The version you need is cheaper and simpler but a bit harder to track down. I've seen at least one on ebay though:
