Get some soapy water and give them a good soak and then dry them of with a rag or something.

Get your dad doing something useful, like cleaning the garage and not your bike!!

The truth is mate, your dad is trying to kill you.

Does he resent you in any way? Are you next in line to the family business but he'd prefer your younger brother have the business? Laughing Wink

Clean the discs using lots of strong degreaser and lots of elbow grease.

Take the pads out, clean those using brake cleaner and then sand the pads down a little bit as the tops of them will now have WD40 soaked into them.

And ermmm, you'd probably be best asking your dad if he can never touch your bike or do anything to it ever again. Laughing

Reminds me somebody here their dad cleaned their entire bike and but back to black on the tyres, first corner = floor.

I'd chuck the pads tbh, supposedly it'll burn off eventually but i'd change them anyways.. brake cleaner for the rest and never let him near it again Shocked

I remember using GT85 on my discs, after doing it I went down a big hill and noticed my leg getting REALLY hot! the entire rear end of my bike was on fire Laughing Laughing If it was only a little it should wear off, when I used to clean my bike I always got something on the discs and it wears off after a mile or so!!

i do some work in a pushbike shop. we get quite a lot of people spraying the WHOLE bike in the likes of GT85 to make it shiney Confused then complain the brakes are crap.

get some decent brake cleaner (basically just alcohol), get the pads out, then sand them down a bit of glass (or anything else really flat) while the're swiming in the brake cleaner (this prevents you from breathing in brake pad dust, and helps shift the oil). clean them of with a CLEAN rag, soak in brake cleaner again, and light them with a lighter. while the alcohol is burning off, and the pads are cooling down, clean the disks with plenty of brake cleaner and elbo grease as "ste" says.

it works on pushbikes, and it worked on my bandit when i got brake fluid all over the disks

I've just repeated what Ste said haven't i Question

Just use the brakes for a while I'd suggest.

I've had WD40 contamination on my single front disc before, and after a few 70mph brake-dragging miles it was entirely fine.

Meths is also a good budget disk cleaner.

If you dare, and I mean take it very cautiously, a good ride in the wet will help. Build speeds up gradually until your confident the brakes are working again but keep to a speed you know you are still capable of stopping at.

Yes do this as a minimum, best thing is to replace the pads. They're cheap. Disk cleaner will clean only the disk - TBH so will washing up liquid when it comes to WD40, but the pad surface will be ruined.

As to the just ride it / wash it / spray it (basically anything lazy or tightfisted) approach - This is Darwin award stuff. Don't do it.

Cue lots of "well I did it and it was OK" replies Wink

I'm not a big fan of the stuff to be honest though. It's expensive, really is very potent unless used outdoors, and is never as good as you expect it to be.

Contact cleaners are usefull, but not for cleaning disks. A rag dipped in 1p's worth of meths works just as well I've always found.

Well I did it and it was ok.

Actually, I didn't even attempt to clean anything off on the several occasions I have got WD40/grease/fork oil/F365 on the brakes. Just repeatedly applied the brakes until they were proper bastard hot and it all burned off.

This should not be taken as a recommendation for what other people should do.

As some1 else said, just find and empty road and keep jamming your brakes on until it cleans itself up.
Mine are fine and i've done it by accident twice now.

If you want your brakes to work REALLY well spray some pepsi on them...

I found that araldite works really well for stopping your front wheel moving at all.

I concur, there are far too many cleaning agents on the market that claim to be specific for one part, and they're usually all far too expensive.
