 Posted: 18:16 - 16 Jan 2007 Post subject: So, who's SORN'd before? |
 |
|
I've got the letter through from the DVLA that the bike needs taxing at the end of the month, which for the last two years I've done straight away as it's meant that I can just get straight on it when the weather gets better (yeah, and don't all start bitching and moaning that I'm a fair weather biker, it's what my car and its heater are for! )
But, this is the first year it'll need an MOT too and I still have to have the Yamaha recall for the throttle position sensor to be done too.
As the weather is still, frankly, shit, I was wondering whether to SORN it for a couple of months before getting everything done together.
I've never SORN'd anything before so was just wondering how simple it was to chop and change it when I'm ready, from first hand experience, so to speak. (Kickstart, I'm thinking of you and your 'fleet' here! )
Is anyone able to shed more light on the subject for me please?
Ta

SORN is simple, do it online in 2 minutes. When the time comes you just walk into a post office with the normal documents and tax it. Piss-easy. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

I had a sod of a time sorting out SORN's for all the rusting metal in the backyard.
DVLA ended up picking my pocket for a small fortune because they hadn't received the documents...
Everything was sorted in the end and they sent through the SORN notice for the two bikes and bug remaing on SORN earlier this month.
DVLA are damned quick to take money off of you if they don't have documents declaring SORN in their grubby little mitts. Sickeningly one of the vehicles in question has heritage tax status.
If the bike will go through an MOT put it through and tax it, taxing a bike isn't expensive so you'll 'lose' next to nothing and at least then you don't have to fiddle about with anything when you are ready to go back on the road.
If it won't pass an MOT then SORN it, but if you do it on line take a screen shot when you complete the form just to make sure their servers don't 'misplace' your SORN.
If you can do it over the counter make sure you get a receipt. If you postit send it special delivery and hassle them by phone when you knowits arrived to make sure they update your vehicle as SORN.
There is a page on the DVLA site that allows you to see the current tax status of a vehicle. Here.
Bitter, me? Nah. ____________________ Kal...

I have VERA 1994 Part 2, section 22 at home somewhere.
It boils down to you can ride/drive an untaxed/untested vehicle to and from a testing station that you have prebooked an MoT at.
Further, if the vehicle fails an MoT you can take it to a certified mechanic for repairs if prebooked.
In my younger more irresponcible days we used this clause to shuttle vehicles without MoT's round the Country. (There is no provision in VERA for the Mechnic/testing Station in question being the closest one to the Vehicle)
However as any Police Officer I may run into may not know the ins and outs of VERA I print off a copy and have it on me in case I am stopped.
You do have to have the vehicle insured though. Unless you've got 1/4 million sitting in the bank doing nothing... ____________________ Kal...

Ok Sorry for bein an out of towner but what the fuck is a SORN ??
SORN -> Statutory Off Road Notification
Im guessin its declairing that you wont be riding the bike while its unregistered.
Yes and when SORN has been declared for a vehicle the registered keeper must ensure that it will not be used or kept on a public road until a new licence has been taken out
Does it cost money to "SORN" a vehicle?
NO
Any more questions click

There is a point to it since they changed the way they track peole who don't pay road tax! Like now you get automatic penality if you haven't applied for road tax and not declared SORN. ____________________ Theory: 34/35, 64/75 Test: 23-Oct-06 PASSED (No minors)

Like others have said takes 2 seconds online. Only need to input about 4 bits of info!
If you keep it SORN you will have to re-new the SORN, like tax, after 12 months or you will be hit with a £40 fine (raising to £80 after a couple of weeks)
Getting bike back on road, just take V5, Insurance and MOT to Post Office or local DVLA office and re-new tax. Or do that online too!
