Was riding around today and have had some very strange problems with the Divvy 600.

I rode it up the A48 to pick up my girlfriend, it's a 10 mile ride at NSL speeds and it was fine.

Once I got there however, the bike was acting as if it was low on petrol (I filled up yesterday, I know I have about 3/4 of a tank left). The bike died, sat at the side of the road for 5 minutes before deciding to start again. Then 5 minutes later it died again, then started, then died, you get the point.

It's really irritating. I've found that if I leave the fuel tap to carb prime then the bike will run but it still feels as if it's lost a little power.

Any suggestions?

I did think it could be icing since it was so cold last night. But I figured that, well, once the engine was started and had a while to run the ice would have surely melted?

I did run the petrol tank down to nil yesterday (had to push it to a petrol station, only about 50 yards :p ), so perhaps there is still some air working it's way through the engine (complete guess) ??

Hi

Carb icing is not as common as people think. For you to get carb icing it needs to be cool damp weather. Too cold and there is not enough moisture in the air for the icing to occur. Added to which the Divvy has an electric carb heater. Also this would likely occur at speed and would likely fix itself for a short while after sitting at low speed / in traffic for a while.

While possible it would not be the first thing to check.

Personally I would suspect the dodgy fuel pump if it has one of the vacuum operated ones fitted to a lot of Divvys. Check the vacuum pipe from the inlets to the pump. Also open the fuel cap and check for a vacuum in there (sign of a blocked breather hose).

All the best

Keith

Nope. Carb icing is caused by the flow of air through the carbs and the petrol coming from the carbs taking loads of heat with them, reducing their temperature greatly. So much that the moisture in the air condenses and freezes in the carbs. It is not a problem that will happen immediatly when you start the engine, rather a problem that occurs when the engine has been running for a while, normally at some speed.

Low speed running will often allow enough heat from the engine to soak up to the carbs to cure then problem. Same for stopping and leaving the bike for 5 minutes.

Err, add a blocked fuel filter to the top of the list of most likely causes, along with the possibility of water in the carbs (although that would have caused a problem from when you switched to reserve).

All the best

Shit in the carbs? Could be settling in the float bowls, then after a few minutes of runnning it gets trapped in the jets - I'm guessing it is carbed? You can probably drain the float bowls as a first action. Then possibly some redex through the system.

Cheers

Well, so it runs on 'prime' but cuts out on 'on'.

What's the difference? Fuel tap vacuum. On the 'on' position the vacuum from the carbs opens the fuel tap, on the 'prime' position the tap is open all the time.

As such, I would check the vacuum line hasn't become detached, blocked or damaged, then suspect the tap itself.

I would go with "Gunge in the carbs" so pour a bit of Redex into the tank and if you can squirt some neat into the carbs and flush them through.

This sounds like one of the (many) problems I had with my bike whilst we were still running it in this year.

In my case this particular problem was caused cos the fuel breather pipe had become detached.

Being about as tech-minded as a housebrick I have no idea why this caused a problem, but I know it was perfectly OK again once the pipe had been reattached.

Might be something to check and tick off your list of possibilities at least.

Mine died twice in motion the other week, turned out to be the alternator was burned out, and not charging the battery up.

Fixed now and no probs, but as for the switching of the fuel, no idea!

Being as cold as it is, its mostly battery type problems.
