really pisses me off when i see mid 40 age blokes out on a sunday round the town on their shiny as fuck never seen rain GS. proper bought it as a designer label. If you aint gonna use it properly, GIVE IT TO ME!! haha.

See i know where your coming from about it being a waste, but then again i'm just happy their pumping money into the industry. Allbeit BMW doesnt need it but any money spent on bikes is better than cars in my opinion.

And who knows, maybe they are out round town in their shiny new GS... getting used to it for a bit of touring themselves!

But then again i would say this, as i know someone picking up their shiny new GS this saturday!

I saw long way round and thought it was brilliant.

Yet to see Race to Dakar, hopefully get it for my birthday. But really can't wait to see this latest adventure. Cool

If you like this kind of adventure riding DVD then you should get 'Terra Circa' which is much the same thing but on Suzuki DT350s and no support - tiny budget stuff but well made and very entertaining...

Toby- Could you give an example of somebody who did the Dakar WITHOUT any backup? Ive watched the whole series and every rider has a team behind them???

The long way round, i guess your right about the backup team BUT making a TV show is different to just buggering off. For example, they have to digitaize footage, charge cam batteries, the paperwork trail for even filming in many countries is really long! I think you will find its a lot easier if your a one man band whos not trying to make a series!

no-one seems to realise if it wasn't filmed and "commercialised" then we wouldn't have the enjoyment of watching it.

(also, squiffy)
See 'Terra mentioned circa' above, as well as one or two others.

I don't have any problems with it being commercialised or them 'cheating' a bit - however when people try and put this forward as the greatest thing ever, I do feel it 'devalues' some of the people that have done quite a lot more with quite a lot less .

i have seen tera circa and mondo enduro, in my opinion they are better than long way round, but i still hate people thinking the long way round was rubbish just because it was comercialised.

I think a key thing to remember is that because it was commercialised it allowed more and better footage to be taken - and probably because these were actors and not complete nutters (ala terra circa) they showed more signs of stress (as would most of us) when doing it. This in some ways made it more watchable for the masses which is no bad thing and raises the profile of bikers quite a bit.

Not taking anything away from those who've done it without support - they're heros in my book.

the fact that its been comercialised just makes it available everyone.

I love reading/watching anyones account of a bike ride, even if its just a webcam showing the 5 miles to the shops,

i'm reading BIKE magazine from March and their John-o-groats to lands end trip is brilliant, cant wait for the next issuejust to find out what happened!

Very Happy If I had the chance to blag the gear bikes etc like euan & charlie I'd abuse it too. They admitted that mondo-enduro inspired them. It was a boys own adventure for them . At least they went on bikes not 4x4's

Read something the other day that said they're starting the ride towards the end of this month...... Wink

Looking forward to it to be honest, as really enjoyed the last one, anything that brings bikes into the mainstream is good as far as I'm concerned, even if they do get a full back-up crew. Laughing

Basically every non-factory rider in the Dakar takes part with no backup available, Charlie's crew were a bit of a blip there as they had the money available from all their various sponsorship / TV deals. Every other rider gets a big crate which they fill up with spares at the start of the race and that's flown in between stages for them to pick up when they get to the bivouac.

So if they're lucky they get in at 7pm and have a couple of hours worth of spannering ahead of them and if they're unlucky they don't get in until 1am and have 3 hours of work to do on the bike before setting off at 6am the next day.

Don't get me wrong, just competing in the Dakar is a mammoth task but knowing that when you get in at the end of the day you can go to sleep and that a mechanic will fix your bike up for you is priceless, and most of the bikers don't have that luxury as they're just normal people who've saved (in some cases for years) for the opportunity just to take part in the hardest race in the world, let alone to hire a support crew.

I may be wrong & I'm happy to stand corrected but I thought they only had help from the support crew (on The Long Way Round) during border crossings to make sure the paperwork was completed properly, collect camera footage, charge batteries, etc as was already said. The rest of the time they were on their own with just Claudio and his camera. They had to repair their own bikes while stranded in the middle of nowhere without the support crew arriving to save the day! I agree that one man on a bike would be easier to organise than 3 bikes and a support crew. Don't forget the luggage space taken up by camera equipment would have left less room for the rest of the luggage which the rest of us tourers don't have to worry about!

Yep, they are just crossing into France. Should be an interesting trip by the looks of things.
