The battery has next to 0 power...The neutral light doesn't even come on at full strength. Will it be enough to take a few long rides, or will I have to buy a new battery?

Bump start it, whack it in neutral, gaffa tape the throttle open so it sits at 5000rpm and leave it for a while. Won't do the bike any good but it should get some charge into it.

Can pick up a cheap trickle charger for £10 - shop around...

Yes, 12v. Clip negative (usually black lead) of charger to the battery first. Clip positive (usually red) to the battery. Turn on the charger.

Generally yes but don't leave it unattended during the charge as a carcharger will put out a higher charging amperage than a trickle charger. Plonk your hand on the side of the battery whilst it's charging, and if it's warm, stop charging it. DON'T use the "fast" charge option on the charger if it has one. Leave it on "normal".

2hrs should be plenty to start with, refit it, fire it up and take it for a good long run, preferably during daylight so you don't need mainbeam on.

Trickle chargers for bike / low capacity batteries tend to charge at around 0.4 / 0.5a, whereas car chargers can be anything up to 5a set to their slowest charging speed, and anything up to 12a (possibly more) on fast.

It might take a charge. Though sometimes if they have been left flat for too long it knackers them.

i brought a charger when i had my rs125 and use it now on my sv650s, their priceless, saves you so much money. mine was about £35 if i remember right and after a battery is fully charged it retains the chargbe untill i fit it. 40 mins charge is enough to get the bike started just needs decent run after.

Well worth investing in one imo Thumbs Up

be carefull , lead batteries do not like fast charging . charge intensity must be 1/10 of power . ex : for a 5Ah battery , charge is 0.5 Amps during 8-10 hours . to check if your battery is still in order :
- after charging check voltage . if it's under 12.8 volts throw it
- leave it for 2-3 hours , check voltage again if you have lost more than 0.3 volts throw it

Car chargers are usually High amp chargers and can fry a small bike battery. As Alains says keep an eye on th battery.

I bought an intelligent, fully-automatic charger from Halfords and it is the boss. It charges both car and bike, sealed and old-skool and only puts in what the battery allows. I've never had any problems with any of the batteries I've used on it, even on one I accidentally left on charge over the weekend.

Thumbs Up
