Hi guys.

Due this nice weather Smile my bike has has a hard time starting on the morning even if i use it every day for commuting.

I got a Optimate charge (rigth now, charging the battery)

Maybe is a silly question ,but ... can you use the optimate to "help" the bike to start?
There are some sockets arround the parking so i was thinking that next time she doesnt want to wake up 8), maybe i can just connect the optimizer while the battery is in the bike, and try to start it.

Do you think is possible??

Cheers

Hey,

I've tried this a few times, and can say 100% that an optimate will not allow you any extra power to start your bike. As far as i can tell it has an inbuilt sensor which can tell if the batteries losing any charge. As soon as u press the start button the optimate stops charging and shows a fault with the battery.

However a bog standard charger, with no fancy circuitry, will give u enough juice to help start ur bike.

Cheers,
Shaun.

Thanks for the quick replay Very Happy

Optimate is too clever for it's own good so cuts the supply when it sees the drain on the battery. No good.

Ordinary charger might provide a 1/2 amp extra during starting, which is, frankly, pointless.

Big, sod off start-charger (70 quid minimum cost) is what you want. New Battery is a much better investment.

The CB500 drains my 400a starter pack (yellow thing with torch and compressor builtin) every other use... needs a full recharge every other time...

An optimate is a battery conditioner, rather than a battery charger. Although it can charge up your battery it is at a very small charging rate and in terms of boost starting a flat battery it is no good whatsoever. But of course it is designed to be a booster anyway.

Just buy some jump leads and connect to another bike/car if you have one. I did this when I was getting impatient can couldn't be bothered to let the optimate charge the battery. Bike starts in 30 seconds. Thumbs Up

I have a battery booster that I originally had for the car. I've used it a few times to jump start the bike, and it's worked just fine.
Note that it is actuallymarketed as a "booster" and not just a charger.

(I've since got myself a new battery and an Optimate specifically for the bike though Wink )
