Anyone ever had this sort of thing happen to their bike?

Taken from another forum I frequent, poor bloke.

most probably.

i have picked my bike up before to find half a tank of petrol missing!.

it wasnt smashed to pieces though.

i have seen mechanics still in their overalls taking ferraris for top speed runs on the a34 bypass in wilmslow before now.

it's the only chance they will probably get of driving one.

Not a patch on that but my bike's been offroad for 25 days:

20 waiting for someone to pick it up from my house
5 waiting for someone to replace one of the oil filter cover studs that they have snapped, also they didn't change the oil/touch the sump plug

Pulled by police and told I had no insurance on the courtesy bike (Later proved wrong with producer, lots of fucking about)

A few days later was text by the mechanic saying that his insurance policy had ran out on the loan bike 5 hours AFTER it had expired (It expired at 5pm, I don't think I was riding it after that but if I did and crashed I would have had no insurance).

No apology given, bike now fixed though but having to hang onto the loan bike with no insurance in my back garden until it is picked up.

this reminds me of a thread about oil changes. I said never give the opportunity for a mechanic to fuck something up if you can do the job yourself.

I think toby said that he might as well let the mechanic do the oil change...after all how could they fuck that up ?

Yup

I also need some brake work doing and thought I'd test this new place first before trusting them to not turn my friendly low power commuter bike into a nonstop death rocket into the nearest bus/wall/hedgehog

After i fitted the turbo engine to my astra estate the insurance wanted an engineers report. So i took it to the local garage to bunge them a few quid and get the mot mechanic to say he'd checked it over and it was all safe and legal.

They said leave it with them and they'll sort it when they get a spare 10 mins which was fair enough. I specifically told them not to drive it as i was still running the engine in. About an hour later someone came in the pub and told me my car had just flew past him (he was doing about 60) tyres smoking and torque steering all over the road. Mad

Hi Dudes,

I'd be livid if I were that man. It was a rare kit car, and the mechanic was blatantly doing a Ferris Bueller.

I'd take them to the cleaners.

As a slight aside, I've noticed there is a bike forum on pistonheads, makes for interesting reading: Stuff like : I'm going to buy an R1 after I pass my DAS, I'm sure I'll be ok riding it because I've got a porsche boxter... Confused

{edit} Luckily its not a '98 R1 Wink {edit}

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Yep it happens, I know I've done it. Even asked the customer first and they always say yes.

Had an 98 R1 in for a weekend to strip and export to Brazil. Got it on a friday and ragged the tits off it till the monday with the owners permission.

People soon complain when their pride and joy fails at a ton plus and also complain when the mechanic test rides their pride and joy, we cant win.

Everyone knows that to export a 98 R1 to Brazil you just whisper "carnival" in its wing mirror, and it rushes there at full speed to fuck all the girls in Brazil.

Phone em up and tell them that it is now on the road awaiting collection. They sound like right muppets.

Just me thinking people are being a tad harsh here? Yeah I'd be pissed if it was me, and although the bloke was clearly thrashing the fuck out of it, all this "take the garage to the cleaners" and "make the owner of the garage sell his house to cover the expenses if he's not insured" seems a bit extreme. Everybody makes mistakes, I doubt the garage owner knew the mechanic was going to take it out and rag it, ruining his life over it just seems a bit mad.

I agree, it shouldnt be the garage owner who has to sell up, it should be the mechanic Thumbs Up

Most garages are run by immoral morons, this one seems to be no different. They deserve everything they get. Karma

That is pretty absurd. More disturbing, though, would be the random ad's in the middle of people's posts. Very grateful to not have to deal w/ that here. Thumbs Up

To be fair Sickpup, he did say 'most' and I'm sure he meant 'present company excepted'.

I'd trust most of the mechanical types on here to work on my bike... I might even let Robby touch it! Laughing

Seriously though, there are a large proportion of garages who take advantage of people's trust.

I only know one motorcycle dealer near here that is whiter than white in terms of customer service and attention to detail. And that is one out of many.

But saying that, with regard to the original topic; Unless you've got something really exotic (like an MV Augusta maybe) I doubt that mechanics will be joyriding your bikes, because it is so easy to come by fast bikes. All it takes is one go on a '98 R1 and one go on a 'Busa, and you've been there and done that.

I don't expect many nineteen year old quik fit fitters get to drive a mid engined sportscar every day, whereas 19 year old bike mechanics probably see R1's all the time. The area is a lot more specialised, and oriented towards performance.

Well, I've not meet everyone and you can never be to careful! Razz

No, seriously, I would expect any enthusist owned garage to be fairly trustworthy, that would probably include anyone in the trade and posting on here. (I think thats that hole filled in, I can put the shovel down now!)

Tis a bit of an unfortunate event. I can answer his first question 'where has my front wheel gone?' - easy its in the car with the spare!!

The photo for the crash area doesnt really give an idea of how far apart the two marks were, although at 110 Id expect a fair bit of distance with nothing in the way to stop it. I know I covered a fair amount of ground at 60 myself!

Theres a local story round here of a vauxhall dealer that allowed the mechanics to take a customers nearly new vectra to the chip shop and they completely wrapped it up. Fair enough its taking the piss, and I suppose you could say 'accidents do happen' but the first thing you would say to the customer is sorry, we will sort it out you dont have to worry about a thing. Not this lot, they offered to REPAIR IT lol. Errrr how about no fuck off!
