Hi there,

Anyone got any opinions on the daytona 955?

It seems like it's a bit different to the japanese sports with a lot of character thrown in. I'm thinking of changing my hornet, got really bored of my 900 already, totally disappointed with wind, sound.
It's very reliable but there is something missing. Confused

I didn't fancy the japenese litre or sports 600's as I feel they appeal too much to the masses. My brother in law has had a daytona and he said it's one of the best bikes he's ever owned plus the daytona's british. Thumbs Up

opinions please and feedback? Very Happy

'Character' usually describes failings of a bike.
Compared to it's rivals the 955 is overweight and underpowered, with no more than 'average' suspension.

However, if being different is more important than the riding <shrugs>, it's up to you. One of the reasons the Jap bikes are popular is because they are actually good bikes generally Smile.

There are some ok, though not great in my opinion, deals out there on them.

Depends what you got to spend, what about the Daytona 675. I would love one but can't quite afford it. It's got plenty of character and style and meant to be a great bike, and couldn't agree more with buying British, given how difficult it is to buy anything else British these days.

the tt600 and speed four are also british, but with the practicallity of being light and agile

they are older than the 675 so much cheaper

a bloke i used to work with used to have a 955 and he described it as a barge

Thanks for your thoughts,

I probably didn't point out that I couldn't afford the insurance of some of the japanese sports anyway. Crying or Very sad

I heard that the sound of the triple is better than any japanese sports but I guess i'll have to see. Razz

looking at the stats it weighs in at 195kg which is alot heavier than the others but if i'm honest i'm not really interested in blasting the bike round the track getting the bike past 10000rpm! I like torque and I know the daytona has it in abundance.

Maybe the extra weight is beneficial in respect to safety pulling away from lights?

More the lower power I suspect.

Sounds like you're set on buying on regardless of the specs.
Personally, unless the trumpet was a lot cheaper, I'd go for a zx9 or blade if you want a 'comfortable' sports bike.

Weight does make a difference on the road as well.

I expect something like an R1 or GSXR1000 would have more torque through out the rev range than the 955.

Dry weight seems to be 191kg, against 176 for a CBR1000RR. Add 80kg of rider with gear to it and it is 271 vs 256. A 6% difference. Not much at all.

I had a play a few weeks back on the ZZR600 and timed 30-50 and 50-70 times in 3rd gear (full throttle, no fiddling with the clutch, starting at about 15mph), with just me on it and again with ~15kg of ballast (err, tank bag and ruck sack full of old copies of MCN). The times with the ballast were 3 seconds and 2.9, without the ballast it was 0.1 seconds faster. You are not going to notice that on the road.

All the best

Keith

I think that the weight penalty would make a difference on the track but on the road it seems negligable so I take your point.

The japanese bikes do seem more focused although iv'e never ridden one so I couldn't say.

The daytona pushes out around 125-130bhp which seems more than enough to me although I do love the looks of the zx 6's and 9's.

my mind isn't quite made up just yet.

I reckon the weight is more important for handling than acceleration.
Less weight should aid quicker handling, mean the possibility of better traction etc.
Of course the ratio of sprung to unsprung weight may effect how the bike feels on bumpy roads.
