I went into the petrol station earlier today. Picked up a bottle of milk and some mints, payed with my card. Got to work and looked at my receipt which read "£1.02".

Now I told the guy my pump number, he then scanned my milk and mints. I payed, jumped in to my car and went workbound.

Now what should I do? I was seen entering the shop and registered as paying for something. So its not like I upped it and ran. From that I got into my car and drove away.

Obviously as it was payed for with my card it would be believable that I still think I have payed for it, and hadnt noticed because I wasnt giving them exact change for the sale!

Should I return and pay the money when I finish work? And if not should I expect a knock at the door?

If you're sure you told him the pump number and he heard you (presumably you weren't wearing the helmet in the car) then it sounds like a gift to me. Whistle

Or petrol's suddenly got exceptionally cheap your way.

edit - Were you wearing the balaclava that's in the avatar?

If so, this probably won't be in your favour if they decide to check the CCTV.

But you didn't check the receipt and weren't aware. Just wait until they ask for it. Wink They might have really bad CCTV. Did you fill up like 40 litres or just top up?

A genuine mistake has been made, however now that you have noticed it you must go back to pay.
If you hadn't noticed and had a knock at the door then nothing would have been done other than please go back to pay.
Does it make you feel uneasy? then do the right thing.

Chances are they got your number on CCTV so be expecting a knock on the door.
If I were you I'd drive in again and pay.

Yes, you have to go back and pay. I had exactly the same thing happen to me in Tesco (I worked there at the time).

It /will/ have been noted down as a drive-off. If they have number plate recognition or anyone spotted it, it /will/ have been passed to the police.

For the sake of paying for the stuff you do actually have, go back and pay it.

anyway Sammy, what's up? Still biking? How's the claim going?

Funny one this, maybe you'll get away with it. Once in a shell garage in Blackpool I put a tank full of petrol into the car and when I went in to pay the cashier said that there was nothing on the pump. I told him I'd put £35 in and to check again, and he just replied "it's showing clear". So I bought a pack of gum and got him to sign the reciept then sodded off.

Cheapest fill up I've ever bought...

Be prepared for sad news. His Hornet is for sale in the Mart section having lost a bike license. 54 plate Hornet with 7,000 miles on the clock for only £2,900 ONO though. Smile

i used to work in a petrol station. 9/10 they wont come knocking dont worry.

If they do say you were in the shop and you did pay and did not realise that you wernt charged for petrol! dont worry you wont get carted off to the police station or anything they better things to do.. Smile

but if someone did a drive off the cashier usually has to pay it so would be nice if you did go back and pay but chances of old bill coming are very very very slim..

Nice to know there are some honest people about.

I would go back and pay, they would have know the next time someone tried to use the pump that it hadn't been cleared. Then they would check the cameras, then they may call the police. Its up to you but myself...I would go back and tell them what happened.

I wouldn't be at all suprised if you did go back and pay, to find out you couldn't pay for it anymore anyway!

It'd be far too complicated for the cashier to find out how much you owe, how to put it through as a transaction and how to give you a proper receipt. Laughing

I once used my AllStar card to fill up four friend's cars and forgot to pay for one, I went back. I didn't want the niggling stress of wondering if they'd pursue it.

Peace of mind has a cash value, in this case, its how ever much fuel you put in your motor Smile

I would go back and explain and pay for it.

I would be going out of my mind thinking that they thought i was a thief!

Never worked in a petrol station have you. There will be procedure for it. Because of the nature of filling fuel, people will and do forget their wallet.

Completely innocently, they'll go away, get it, and pay. There will be procedure.

I still work in a petrol station (very occasionally). At Asda it is the cashiers responsibility to ask if there is any fuel, the customer doesn't have to declare it unless asked. So basically if you weren't asked then it is the cashiers fault.

I know different stations have different proceedures, however they will see that you came into the shop and paid for something. At that point I think most places would put it down to cashier error if you weren't charged for the fuel.

Generally if reported to the police, they are at the persons house within 2 hours. I would wait a day, if nothing happens then you are probably in the clear Thumbs Up

we used to have drive offs every week and we reported it to plice with car make and model etc. we never got any of that money back..

My friend actualy owns around 12 petrol stations and its the same thing.. maybe for supermarkets its differnt? but generally from a standard petrol station such as esso that is privatly owned they never seem to do anything!

I must be the only dishonest person on here Smile

You tried to pay, they messed up, their loss, or at least its down to them to track you down and ask for the money they should have taken.

Anyway at £1.02p for milk and some mints they were trying to rip you off!

Id just wait, if they ask for it, its not the end of the world and if not you got it free.

If you still go there a pay for petrol after this incident then you can just claim you didnt realise.

We never get the money back from the planned drive offs, however we get some genuinely forgetful people that fill up and forget to come in. They usually have their cars registered to their address and they are the people that come back in after being prompted by the police!

In an BP the other day, I realised I forgot my wallet after getting fuel.

I went up and explained the situation, saying I could be back in about an hour with the money.
I was told that I /must/ leave the vehicle at the petrol station and they would call a taxi for me to go home and get money if required.

Needles to say, when they refused to budge I explained that I was going to drive off because their policies were ridiculous - for a start I was doing someone a favour in the van so they were giving me petrol money.

Bloke behind the counter explained that he would be calling the police and it was my look out. Blokey then said, "oh what's your registration" - needless to say I didn't give it to him and drove off at some speed.

I did return with the money, but but it seems they are purely making it a lot more hassle for the people who /are/ going to pay. Rolling Eyes

I was running on fumes in my clio a few years ago so pulled into a petrol station.

Check my pocket, no wallet but had a fiver so thought it will do until later!

Start daydreaming and only realise what i had done when the pump clicked and i had filled up the car.

Bloke was dead cool about it and i filled in a form saying i had a week to pay the money.

Went back same night and all is well.

Back on topic.

If they have logged you as a drive off some of the recognition technology will beep like mad and alert staff next time you use that petrol station so you may get grief that way.
