Hi

Seems that the fire risk from using a mobile in a petrol station may be non existant:-

I saw a prog once when they put a load of mobile phones in a caravan, actually sitting in bowls of petrol, doused the 'van in petrol, basically made it as fumey as possible, then retreated to a safe distance and rang the phones.

Nothing happened. Smile

Brainics it was!

On the same show they proved that a guy dancing abount in nylon clothes in a plastic bucket could blow the same caravan up!

I've always been dubious about this too.

I think it was the situation that somone used a mobile and caught fire once, and since then they've adopted a better safe than sorry attitude.

I posted about this on a car forum once. Apparantly there was a TV show which conducted an experiment.
They filled a caravan with petrol, completley doused it. They put about 30 phones all round the vanand set them all ringing. Nothing
Then they connected a wire from the van to a guy in a polyester top 200 yards away. He rubbed his top and touched the wire, BOOM! Very Happy

apparently the big old 80's mobiles used to cause a lot of static or something. Modern phones arent anywhere near as bad. my phone rang in the petrol station yesterday and nothing set on fire Laughing

The real reason they don't like you using them is because it interferes with the telemetry on their pumps and can make the payment system go haywire.

They used to complain about the same thing when people fitted burners (signal amplifiers) to their CB radios back in the 80's, it used to bleed through the speakers in your car and such, wreaked havoc with automatic pumps. Whilst it might be possible to induce enough current in a metal object to throw an arc using radio waves, everything in a petrol station is earthed to within an inch of its life.

If there was such a fire risk in petrol stations I am damned sure you wouldn't be allowed to run an internal combustion engine in them. My motorcycle produces eighteen electrical sparks per second.

Id tend to agree that is more logical than the fire risk, which is now non-existant, still a very low risk of this happenin though.

any 2 stroke motorcycle doing 4500 rpm (which alot of bikes may do on the forecourt) is producing about 75 sparks per second with anything upto 20,000 volts per spark i bet that would blow it up if it shorted

Rolling Eyes Laughing Rolling Eyes Laughing
Sorry that struk me as hugely funny.
Mobile phones are not aloud to be used on the forecourt because it is in the petroleum license that no mobile phones, cb radios, and other sources of radio waves can be used on the forecourt. It is against the law for a petrol station to allow you to fill up while using a mobile phone. If there are found to be doing this they will loose their license and will no longer be able to store dispense or sell petroleum products.

I dont know why the law is like this but it is.

And how many petrol stations have mobile phone masts hidden in the price sign? Apparently very common.

Good job really since I've never once bothered turning my phone off while filling up yet! Razz

OK techie moment.

A lot of the warnings went up long before digital phones came about - around 10 years or so back when phones were analogue based. Digital phones of course generate a different form of radio wave which isn't as strong as the analogue waveform & operates at a much higher frequency, well out of the old analogue signal.

In a nutshell using an analogue transmitter of any kind can clear the information on the petrol pumps - hence why they stop them. I found this out once when i was in a petrol station & someone shouted me up on the CB i had in the car... like a nump i replied & then all the pumps cleared & hit zero.

Another reason of course is the fact if you operate any kind of electrical switch (including a button on a phone) or make electrical contact - even plugging a phone into a charger - it can cause a spark & possibly ignite the fuel spirit in the air.

one think i never get over though is that you have to turn your phone off if you go into a hospital (for similar reasons - it wipes the info on the machines & plays havoc with the readings) yet i did some work for hospital radio a few years back & found out there transmitter mast was mounted on the roof of the old telephone exchange smack in the middle within the hospital grounds.

Mobile phones play merry hell with ECG machines, we have one at work and when my phone does that "Duh, da, duh. Duh, da, duh" thing when it is speaking to the transmitter the ECG starts going mental and the alarm on it goes off. This is not surprising when you consider it is measuring the tiny electrical impulses through (in my case) a dogs heart via little pads stuck to the bottom of its paws.

The 'offical' answer we give to Joe public when asked about this, is that people tend to get distracted when talking on the phone, and lets face it, getting distracted when filling anything with a potentionally explosive subsance is a BAD idea. Confused

Re: the above video... Mythbusters Proved that re-entering a car during refueling was likely to cause a static discharge at the end of the fuel pump, in turn causing an arc and possibly an explosion.

The reason behind the phones being banned was exactly as stinkwheel said. They interfered with the counters, and petrol stations lost money.

Used to work in a petrol station, can assure you that there are no mobile phone masts hidden in petrol price signs!

It is against the petroleum licencing act to use a mobile phone anywhere on the forecourt, that includes next to the fuel valves!

The guy should have asked you to leave the forecourt/kiosk completely or asked you not to use your phone whilst there!

(As was said in What's Eating Gilbert Grape?) Boom Boom, Match in the gas tank!!

If you receive a text in a vehicle with the radio tuned to an AM station, you can hear interference as it receives - I can imagine this doing something undesireable in a hospital setting.,
