Hey everyone,

Im planning on taking off my pillion footrest and exhaust mounts on my ybr due to a huge build up of rust, which i hate.

To remove the rust, i will probably use the electrolysis method as described here. https://www3.telus.net/public/aschoepp/electrolyticrust.html

unless anyone elts can think of a better process to do this.

After will bake in a 200 degree oven for a few hours, after removing all the rust.

will then find a colour match to the rest of the bike (black) and spray the whole thing.

I have a few questions:

1.) is this the right technique and what elts do i need to do?

2.) how many coats of primer and paint should i do?

3.) is it even a good idea?

Here are some pic's so you can see what i have to deal with.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dale

Not sure how well that method of rust removal works, if it was me I would just use wire wool on it and alot of elbow grease, then when you have all the rust gone id sand down the paint wit sand paper.. As for painting it really depends on the paint you use but generally I apply about 2 or 3 tin coats of primer at about 15 minute intervals of each other then a two coats of paint and then two coats of laquer.

Good luck,

Ciaran.

3 coats of primer with a rub down of dry wet and dry between each coat, and 2 coats of your top colour.
hope this helps you.

and what will the finish be like?

Also, run out of fs 365, so used some wd40 ot protect my exhaust, forks, wheels, engine etc.

Is WD40 a good temorary replacement?

Powder coating will be much more hard wearing than paint.

I painted the FZR frame with Hammerite, used for the intended purpose, prepped and ready to go. However, the slightest fart near it caused the paint to peal and got damaged easily when bolts and bits were refitted.

If you spray it right an use at least two coats of laquer u will have a lovely hard finish.. how ever if your not very confident in your spraying skills, id go with powdercoating, its very easy to mess up spraying and get a nasty finish. If you can afford it id get it powdercoated it really is the beez neez!!

From my fairly limited experience I wouldn't bother painting it unless you can sandblast it first, and be sure to lacquer it.

When I've sprayed things that haven't been sandblasted, the slightest dink takes both the primer and the paint straight off - Which defeats the whole object.

I think the extra keying and adhesion of a sandblasted surface helps to prevent this.

There have been a number of powder coating threads on here, I believe that wheels are around £30 and frames around the £100-£150 mark. These prices occasionally include the powder coaters collecting the parts too.
