Maybe...

It may have a coolant leak, which is not good. But if that were the case, it would probably be blowing the stuff out all the time and all over the place.

The other option is that the bike boiled over after it was parked up. When you stop the engine, the coolant stops circulating and the stuff that's in the hot bit of the engine can boil (it gets hot as per the engine running, but isn't moved toute suite to the bit of the engine that does cooling) and so blows extra coolant into the expansion chamber, and then to the floor.

Your options there are:

1. There's something horribly wrong - the bike was seriously overheated.
2. There was just too much coolant in the expansion chamber.

So, look for any obvious leaks and check the coolant level in the expansion chamber (should have min and max lines) If it appears ok, use the bike (kepp an eye on the temperature guage) and hope it doesn't happen again.

And finally - that looks really green. Are you sure it's diluted correctly??

mate i have not got a clue!

The bike had its 12000 mile service little over 300 miles ago (about year ago)

My missus bought it off a dealer and they gave us the paper work. Receipt for a service which from the mileage was only 300 miles ago when the other lady had owned it. Then she had not used it cause she got preg then she sold it and we bought it.

This is the first time this has happened. Now it could be due to us getting it out the shed and leaving it running (stationery) at the back of the house to keep the battery charged as they do tend to get hot cause they are not moving. Then she turns it off and puts it back in the shed. Could it have got a little warm and then when she has put away its blown a bit out??

Cause i didnt wipe it up off the floor and put the bike back and it doesnt seem to have happened again. She was out yesterday did over 100 miles and it seems ok.

I cant make out whats in that tank under the seat I just can see if there is anything in i tried shining a torch but i cant tell any easier way to tell??

Is that even the coolant? lol.

Such a girl arent i!

I put her bike on the other side of the shed today to see if it leaks again.

Cath

Mop up spilt coolant - it's high ethyleneglycol content makes it VERY slippy, and also toxic - you really don't want any getting on tyres, and if you have cats etc you don't want `em licking it up - it WILL make them ill...

You know that it'll take about an hour of idling engine to put back into the battery the amount of charge you took out starting it in the first place Smile

I think "buy a trickle charger" may be appropriate advice. Smile

Is that the right colour to be coolant though? Confused

It seems awful bright and green to me, the coolant we use is kind of blueish. Also, the green bit looks kind of thick and gloopy, wrong consistency?

At first glance to me it looked like that stuff you put in the tyres to seal them if you get a puncture.

I havent a clue what it is. I will take off the coolant cap tonight to see if I can see anything in there and what colour it is. What should coolant smell like.

This stuff was kinda greasy like persil and didnt really smell of anything?

well weird! racking my brain now to think what else it might be!

There is no "it might be..." - it is DEFINITELY coolant. I will state that with 100% certainty.

Coolant comes in many forms... reddish color generally indicates presence of polypropylene glycol (non-toxic). Greenish color indicates ethyleneglycol (toxic). Blueish color generally is based on Pentosin.

Green coolants (ethylene glycol based) tend to be a bit thicker than the others, and offer the best antifreeze properties.

It'll also look thicker if it's been leaked out whilst hot - water content will evaporate leaving behind the concentrated additive itself (coolant is is distilled water mixed with an anticorrosion-antifreeze-additive).

See https://www.mnpoison.org/index.asp?pageID=155, but ignore all statements of EthyleneGlycol being "more efficient" than water as a coolant. It has a higher boiling temp and lower freezing temp is all, meaning your coolant can get hotter than 100 deg C without boiling, and (depending on concentration) as cold as -40 deg C without freezing. It still doesn't hold a patch to plain water for thermal capacity and specific heat.

Part of the reason Ethylene Glycol and other additives are banned on racetracks is due to their surface-tension-reducing properties which result in a slippery surface, and the other part is due to it's toxicity.

Personally, I only use polypropylene additives - nowhere near as slippery, and non-toxic, and thus in an accident pose no further risk of the accident worsening. Generally I fill up with distilled water then dump a single 4oz bottle of Zerex in...

Also must get that cleaned up in the shed tonight or on Sat morning. Dont think it went on any of the tyres etc just me finger.

Hope I can figure it out as I havent got any spare money to spend on the garage finding it!!!

Damn it! Wish I had of known what it was the other day as I would not have let her out on it yesterday!

Coolant doesn't smell of much and can be a variety of colours.

Take the top off the expansion bottle and look inside - it should be about half full of identical green stuff. Look for the min and max marks on the side of the bottle (sometimes hard to see on a bike).

Stop the stationary idling gig, I reckon it'll be fine.

I think you should check if the fan, assuming there is one, is coming on when it heats up. Mine comes on after about 5 minutes of starting the bike and leaving it parked up. Always comes on after about 30 seconds of parking the bike up after a ride.

Shouldn't cost anything to sort - more than likely you simply boiled over... If it's recently serviced and is running fine otherwise, then worst case it'll be a jubilee clamp on the end of a hose that's worked loose or rusted... if loose just tighten it up again. If rusted, replace - they're about 75p.

Most thermostats are set to kick the fan in when coolant reaches 100 deg C, which is generally the start of the red section on your temp guage - can take a while (30mins or so) for it to get there from cold if just idling it outside. Once fan fires up, temp should drop by 20 degrees within a minute...

Don't run the bike just to charge the battery Smile.

I've noticed you can't see hee-haw through the sides of expansion bottles of newer bikes., so take the top off the bottle, look inside and guess.

If can't get head at right angle to look in, grab a l'il ruler. Measure from neck of expansion tank down to midway between min and max. Dunk ruler in tank the same distance and pull out... look for the "water" line (ie: use a ruler as a dipstick). If can't get a clear enough line, fold a piece of paper around the ruler.

reckon it was this as it was a week ago i noticed the green stuff and the puddle doesn't seem to be any bigger now.

As the bike is on the other side of the shed now I will look tonight to see if there is another puddle or not.

Will also look to see if I can see where it came from and I will try to look in the bottle to see how much is in there too.

Thanks for all the replies so far guys Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Expansion chamber won't be pressurised - so shouldn't be a problem. But you do actually need to check the level when cold Smile

Taking the radiator cap off when it's hot - well, that's a whole different 6 foot fountain of boling hot water and steam.

same thing happened to me once. it turned out that one of the jubilee clips was slightly loose, just tightened it up, filled up the expansion tank again, and it was fine. i put a bit of thread lock on the screw as well.
