I have an st1100 and the collector box and the section of pipe that comes from it has rusted and is going to need replacing. I can have someone make up two sections of pipe that would join the downpipes to the silencer on each side but would that cause problems (fuelling)?
What does the collector box do?

This is an ST1100 without the fairings, the exhaust seems to run straight to the silencers, I can't see what the collector does:

Couldn't we just fabricate 2 new pieces by here to joing onto the silencer:

Collector box collects all the gases from the header pipes

Head pipes are designed to regulate back pressure, and are seperate so they can all be bent in the same shape to ensure they arrive in the collector at the same time.

(I think Wink )

make one up and change the fueling to suit. As long as they are the same length, there shouldnt be any problems.

yeah you could do what your proposing,
the collector is just an easy way of getting all the pipes into 1 box,
normally there is just 1 can that comes off, but in your case there is 2,
at the moment you have a 4 to 2 to 1 to 2 Very Happy
but a 2to 1 as you decscribed would work perfectly fine and probly be a few kgs lighter as well Very Happy
as long as you have the first couple of bends from the head then there is enough back pressure for your bike to run sweet as Very Happy

that bike looks cool naked Very Happy Thumbs Up

I hate to tell you this but thats not exactly correct, they can have an effect but baffles are a better form of regulating back pressure as well as quieting the sound.
A collector box is a term used to describe where the down pipes of your exhaust meet up before they pass through to the silencers. Some times there are baffle plates inside the collector box.
A standard exhaust system normally has quite a large collector box to deaden the sound, where as an aftermarket exhaust might not even have one, might just be a 2 into 1 / 4 into 1 connector.
Collector boxs can also restrict the flow of the exhaust gas's which is why most aftermarket exhaust systems are of a "free flow" nature, they can get the exhaust gas's out faster and thus make the engine breath a little better combine this with adjustments in your carburation and you can release a few more BHP from your engine.
But remember that any work done to your exhaust effects the way you engine will perform and run and you must check your carburetor mixture to find out whether you are running lean (holed pistons, not good!)
