PostPosted: 14:48 - 07 Jan 2007    Post subject: Bullet Cam wind noise Reply with quote

I did a video the other day, and over 10mph all I got was wind noise! Couldn't hear the engine or anything other than wind Sad

So I've been trying to block it out, with no success so far...

I tried putting a bit of sellotape over the microphone, which although it was slightly better, still made a wind noise when I blew into it?

So does anybody have any ideas on how I would block out the wind noise?

By the way, this is my camera, with the microphone just next to the lens.

You won't get rid of it completely.

But I tape the microphone under the strap of my backpack, or fold some material over it on the pillion seat, it doesn't dampen the sound too much but cuts the majority of wind out. You could try some foam too, but I wouldn't hold much hope of that working very well.

Can you attach a seperate microphone? Mine has a seperate one and I place it under the rear seat - I get all the engine/exhaust noise and no wind noise whatsoever.

Dammit Sad

I just had an idea with some cling film, stretched it over the lens and mic then put an elastic band on to hold it tight, quality was still good but it still gets wind noise when I blow into it Confused

Would be nice to have a port for an external mic, but then it defeats the point of a wireless unit.

Might just do a video with the camera facing backwards, that way the wind shouldn't hit the microphone?

The turbulence will still cause wind noise facing backwards, possibly even worse.

I didn't realise the Mic was part of the camera, hence my suggestions, as mine is on a seperate lead. Are you recording to a DV camera? Can you not plug a seperate microphone directly into that, or use the cameras Mic?

Nope it's all one unit, wireless, hence why I can't have an external microphone, nor one of those fluffy things that go around big microphones...

I'm stuck for ideas now...

Setting the cam as far as below the screen will help reducing wind noise. I set folded towel over the meters(inside the screen) at first(to set the cam), then fix the cam with parcel tape on the cowling(together with towel).

It records onto an SD card.

This is the back of the unit:

And this is my cling film invention:

Look at that link again:

Quote:
Gustbuster

Designed to fit most consumer camcorders with an integral microphone, the Gustbuster Mini Windjammer works like an eye patch, being held in place with two adjustable elastic straps. As camcorders vary in shape and size, the Gustbuster fits to most camcorders and gives you affordable wind protection.

Nice, didn't realise you could get an all-in-one unit like that.

Best bet, assuming the mic is that slot above the lens is just to get a very small but thick or folded bit of cloth and tape it directly over the mic itself. Gonna lower the volume significantly but may get rid of your noise.

Mount it behind your screen (assuming its a clear one), if not construct some kind of clean cover for the front of the camera and mic out of perspex or something.

Could also be picking up vibrations couldn't it?

What i would do is get some pipe insulation foam, then cylidrical stuff, the cut to size, leaving spaces where you need to access stuff then slide it inside, then wrap in duck tape. Then just attach to your bike really firmly

My 2 cents Smile

It's a tinted screen but it still records fine, I did a tank cam on it before and came out fine. But I want to be able to mount this thing wherever I want! The idea of getting a wireless unit!

As said foam or fabric is the only way to get rid of wind noise, cling film will do jack shit to help. Even then if you mount it in full wind blast you will still get a certain amount of noise.

Keeping a seperate mic under a fairing, you still get a lot of windnoise, so unlikely you'll sort it with that kind of design camera.

Bullet cam I use has a seperate mic, tried it in my bag before and it wasn't great, inside the helmet turned out ok as i could add commentry if i wanted as i went along

Graham best bet IMO would be to edit out the sound afterwards or cover with music.

Or if you really want sound use a seperate recorder and microphone then mix it in sync with the video on your pc

It's been a good while since I've been out with a cam but this was one of my last attempts - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-kbUJXJjlc

BTW sorry about the angle the cam gets at after a while didn't notice till I put it on the pc! Embarassed

Yeah suppose, Most bike videos generally have music and hardly any 'bike sounds' anyway.

I'll certainly be trying the pipe insulation foam trick, to stop vibrations.

Yeah I'd sellotape foam (try a sponge), kitchen roll or something soft into the microphone's 'hole' and see what that does.
