Hi all,
Am planning on going on holiday to Alberta, Canada next year. Was wondering what the licence requirments are to hire/insure bikes over there. Wouldn't mind doing a bit of minor touring whilst over there, but can't seem to find anything
Any help about the above would be great, also places to see in Alberta (apart from Jasper National Park)
Thanks ____________________ <CBT passed 16th Sept 2007><Theory Test passed 11th Oct 2007><Practical Test passed 19th Apr 2008>

Consider going to Banff - it's a great place. You can take a cable car (or walk) to the top of Sulphur Mountain for stunning views.

The drive from Jasper to Banff is fantastic, especially the Icefields Parkway. There are lots of places to stop and go for posted walks to viepoints etc. There's also a place near Banff called Lake Miniwanka (not kidding!) that is very nice for a wander about.
Just watch out for the bears..... |

SJP thanks for the info, Banff does sound like a pretty cool place...I'll be careful with the bears, but I'm gonna go stalking moose!
Thanks again ____________________ <CBT passed 16th Sept 2007><Theory Test passed 11th Oct 2007><Practical Test passed 19th Apr 2008>

Don't forget YK and NT!!!
Take the temporary ice road during winter across the Mackenizie River, from Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk. Then head towards the Beaufort sea. See if we can find Franklin's hand |

From what I've seen bike hire is pretty expensive over there.
We're flying into Calgary in April, then making our way down to Medicine Hat, probably spending a weekend up around Banff/ Lake Louise first. We liked the Idea of renting a couple Harleys and just fucking off for a couple of days, but hire prices in the area seem a little daft. ____________________ I was only doing what it said on my licence officer....

Expensive bike hire, cheap petrol. Do you think that equals it out?! ____________________ <CBT passed 16th Sept 2007><Theory Test passed 11th Oct 2007><Practical Test passed 19th Apr 2008>

Awesome, I'll make a note of those I'd love to visit the Pow Wow! That'd just make the whole trip worthwhile!
The Hat's got a great village sign IIRC ____________________ <CBT passed 16th Sept 2007><Theory Test passed 11th Oct 2007><Practical Test passed 19th Apr 2008>

AFAIK to buy a bike in Canada, you have to have a Canadian drivers permit, be a resident (for insurance) and have a house/flat for correspondence. You also have to have a Canadian bank account IIRC
Looked into that ____________________ <CBT passed 16th Sept 2007><Theory Test passed 11th Oct 2007><Practical Test passed 19th Apr 2008>

thanks for the info... that's quite annoying. I might be heading out to UBC for a few months and fancy something to nip around on. Not sure it's worth the hassle though.
Can I get a friend to register the bike in his name and nsures it with myself as a named driver?
I'm surprised there aren't companies that will hold your passport / a huge deposit to register bikes for you and arrange insurance..
a business opportunity maybe? ____________________ past bikes: KX125, CG125 (first road bike, used to pass test on), GS500 (first proper bike). |
