Hi people, Am hopefully taking my test soon. Was just wondering what everyone thought about the CB500 as my first real bike. Learning on a CG125 at mo and would like to stay with that naked style. Budget of approx £2000 max

Wish i had bought a CB instead of my GS It seems to me that they have a better build quality. I did prefer the look of the GS at the time but there is not allot in it.

Depending on where you live insurance and the like you might want to get something bigger to start with. Like a bandit, hornet or SV I got bored with the GS so quick and now wish i had bought bigger. (500's do forgive a bit more i suppose)

Hi Phil, and welcome to BCF.

My first "big bike" was a GS500, but i have also ridden CB500's

the 500cc class in general is a good place to start, enough power to get you into and out of trouble.

First things first, i would advise against spending the full 2k on the bike, you will most likely only keep it for a year... (No matter what you think now, you WILL get bored of the power of a 500 after 4-6 months, saying that, even though i was bored after 6 months, i would still ride it everyday for fun, and it still put a smile on my face)

I had a fair few problems with my GS, but then i only paid £250 for it...

CB500's are pretty bulletproof... 100 million couriers cant be wrong Razz... parts are abundant and relatively cheap, whichever 500 you buy get Bridgestone BT-45 tyres for it Thumbs Up

GS500: Cheap one
CB500: Reliable
GPZ500: Sportier (with a supposed top end kick past 7k revs)

Look to spend between £800-1400, look after it and you will likely get your money back after the year, and have a fair few stories to tell...

I totally agree, I have been riding around on an ER5 for the last 7 months, and it for me it was the right thing to get after passing my test. Perfect introduction to bigger bikes and I now feel ready to take the step up, to something a little bigger.

Shameless plug Rolling Eyes but my ER5 is for sale.
