Places to see in france

Hey guys,

i had a bit of shit news about my trip in May, basically transmediteraenia ferrys or whatever its called has cancelled its bilbao to portsmouth route. P&O do the same route but its about 3 times as much as what i had paid.

So..... I am thinking of getting the ferry back from france to uk, so apart from the milau bridge and paris are there any other must see sights?

Doh, that's unlucky, quality lager was 1 euro each on that ferry. Though at least you got saved from the dodgy kareokee onboard.

Have you tried Brittany Ferries for a quote, they also do a similar route?

Out of interest I just got a quote off P&O for a return ferry in July, seems they've really ramped their prices up, wanted + 500

I'm not entirely sure about things to see, per se, but I would pay a visit to Troyes. It's a great place--the first time we went, we were just stopping over on the way to Montpellier, and we headed into the town at 10pm expecting not very much in the way of anything.

Lo and behold, there was a rock band playing, the carousel was out, and the terraces were still open and serving food well into the early hours. Some gorgeous architecture and all. Superb!

Montpellier is always a favourite for me because of the Place de la Comédie. Sitting out there at midnight in one of the many bars, temp in the mid 20s with a beer on the table and street performers milling about...trams pulling up every 5 minutes..It's an odd place that has a really carnivalesque atmosphere, and somehow manages to escape all the mozzies that plague the étangs of the area. Nice beach.

If you find yourself up in Limousin, you could go see "Les Loups de Chabrières", in the Creuse département and near the commune of Guéret, which is basically a wildlife sanctuary that has loads of wolves living there. There used to be wolves living there in the wild, but the number dwindled down to something like 20 when the farmers basically shot the lot. There are loads there now though, all different types. It's really cool. I don't know how easy it would be to get there though, and if you're only passing through I wouldn't recommend it. It's a bit hard to get to.

If you have some time and you find yourself in Nice, get the ferry from Nice to Calvi in Corsica. You won't regret it, although you might find you need to extend your holiday by a couple of weeks as I can guarantee you won't be doing anything other than sitting around, drinking beer and swimming for a while. Most relaxing place I've ever been.

I can't think of anywhere else offhand. Sorry they're not very day trip-practical. It's been a while since I was in France (half a year), and I find it really hard just to spend one or two days in France anyway.

Last summer I had a short while in Arcachon. Its a very nice coastal town where all the Oysters are from, but the reason I'd go by on a way home is to see the Dune du Pyla (I think its that?).
Anyway, its the biggest sand dune in Europe. When you're stood on its its quite amazing. Like a big hill that looks over the whole of the surrounding area, but just made of sand.

So yeah, I would recommend a quick stop in Arcachon to sample some Oysters, then onto the Dune.

If you find yourself with some free time and its a nice hot day, I recommend it.

If you are going past Montpellier, then stop off for a quick dip at St Guilhem le Deserts. In fact pop into at tourist info centre and they will point you in the right direction. I remember somewhere in the l'herault mountains is quite pleasant to stop and relax a while, a big lake that you can swim in and plenty of sun and shade.

I've just done Dover-Calais and down to Spain, it cost me around 120GBP one way (75-fuel, 20-hotel, 20-ferry, food-5). It took a day to reach Spainish border (with a 0445 ferry, reaching Spain 2200). Just so that you have an idea of costs.

The AT ferry was making a loss, hence they cancelled it. I had hoped to go that way too. The other ferries have cheap deals on around new years and are significantly cheaper if you purchase more than 3 months prior to travel. Other than that they going rate is around 270 1 month before and 350 after that. Dover calais is the same regarding time of purchase. I rarely pay more that 40GBP (return) by booking early.

Hope you enjoy the journey, its quite fun overland, you get to see the changing scenery.

Use viamichellin to check routes in Europe and you can select the level of tolls you pay. The Claremont-Ferrand road has only one toll (Millau Viaduc) which IIRC is about 5 Euros. You should be able to connect enough toll free roads to easily get from Calais to Montpellier unhindered (maybe 10 Euros total).

Toll roads (in France) are only made where there is already a good trunk road, therefore you have a choice.

I thought pretty much everywhere in the South of France was cool. Very scenic along the Mediterranean coast. Monte Carlo and Monico are well worth a look.

Aim for the region Clemont Ferrand and you won't be disappointed. Not only exquisite views but the majority of D roads are fantastic. Check out the D996 for a play.
