A bit of a touring type question but also relates partially to rain suits and keeping cool. In Spain I am told that the thing that kills you is the heat , namely the sun. A couple years back I remember roasting in the UK too.

So would this work? ,

Originally I thought of buying a cheapo length of Lame'

https://www.distinctivefabric.com/images/products/color/jpg/lame1_silver.jpg

It contains metalic fibres so that it would reflect the sun light, and keep me cooler than black leathers as Lame' is semi breathable.

Then I thought of my last tour when I bought along a roll of mylar Idea ...

https://www.mylarstoreonline.com/images/EclipseMylar4mil00.jpg

So if I were to make a rain suit out of mylar the reflective plastic coated foil which balloons and emergency blankets are made of, would this keep me cool? , in that it would reflect nigh 100% of the sun light and arc flash everybody on the road, argh my eyes other drivers will think... Though I only intend to make a suit that goes up to my elbows to prevent giving MYSELF arc flash from the reflectiveness.

But the problem is mylar is 100% non breathable, which means I can use it to double up as a rain suit a proper 100% protective rainsuit (I've used mylar to make water bags). And I need to cross Northern France where the weather is utterly horrible.

Is this a good idea or a bad idea?.

Or would police tend to frown on me being the silver surfer and arc flashing everybody from here to Cadiz?

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Having just rode across the Med I only found the heat a problem in the cities, unless you plan on doing a lot of city riding than your speed should more than compensate for the extra heat? Smile

You will drown in sweat, go for as breathable as possible and do not worry about reflecting light.

Ah but the problem is I've heard from people who've been across the Salamanca Plateau is that the wind and ambient air is also 105F and therefore it WILL NOT cool you down even slightly, and will aid in the roasting process,

Ross Clarkson says

A low screen keep you cool? , are you crazy , the wind in spain ain't like the wind in the UK if its 110 wind it is NOT going to cool you down in the slightest (but then he was trying to hawk me a DB screen)

I might just cruise down the coast of Portugal and suck the ocean breezes instead of crossing the salamanca plateau where it is all barren and roastingly toasty hot.

I'm a bit iffy about going all the way down to the South coast of spain due to roasty effects, .....but I quite fancy the reputed best road in Spain (better than the N240 to Adorra), which is just north of Granada....

Right I'm going to add and airconditioner to my list of equipment... Very Happy

Sounds intersting. However if you go out on a bike looking suspiciously like a jacket potato from the waste down, people from milan to basingstoke will point and laugh because you'll look a twat Laughing

Go in winter?

Or take a jerry can of water with you, you'll need to drink half and use the rest for a wet t-shirt display.

Man up!

You really will look like a tit, and I seriously doubt it will do anything.

Just take plenty of water, and if you feel like shit, stop and take a break!

On a more serious note being a fat bugger I sweat my cobs off in the heat so I got one of these:

https://londonbikers.com/news/7008/weise-air-spin-waterproof-vented-jacket-pants

Weise Air Spin Jackets. Fully fitted armour (removable waterproff liner) lots of strong mesh venting.

If you were worried about still being too hot try an wet long sleeve T shirt underneath, the evaporation will cool you down more. For me it fits teh bill as you will need some crash protection, and to be mostly covered up to prevent sunburn. They do trousers too.

Oddly enough I have some experience with this albeit not on a motor cycle. Bare with me... Cool

A crowd of us were invited to a fancy dress party where the theme was aliens and space men, there was an assortment of people dressed up in sheets with bug eyes etc. I got a disposable painter's boiler suit and a couple of silver survival blankets, I glued the latter on to the former, (printed off USA flags and NASA logos and stuck them on too.)

I can reveal; after wearing my space suit for about 2 hours in fairly average room temperatures, I was drenched in sweat, feeling similar symptons to heat stroke and generally not enjoying myself.

It was extremely uncomfortable. Thumbs Down

Thumbs Up

I got a joe rocket mesh type jacket with armour (removable lining)which is pretty good. Anyway once you're moving and you have some ventilation its not so bad.

If your planning to ride with t-shirt, no helmet, biggest problem will be the risk of getting sunburnt/stroke. Living in thailand i always get my arms burnt to crap everytime i go back.

I think mine may be the older style but it's damn good Thumbs Up Very Happy
Has lots of zips and vents and takes armour - recommend the HG bendy stuff.
Isn't waterproof - but then doesn't pretend to be either so that's ok.

Grab a shoulder mounted water carrier - fill it to the 3/4 mark, freeze it and wear under your leathers.

Breathable leathers are recomended, however my partner used to wear her black leathers when riding across Spain with Raf back in the day.

All you need is fewer clothes, prefferably shorts and t-shirt though a bikini would work if you fancy it, and some of this.

Has worked for me countless times. Thumbs Up
