Cans which arent road legal...

Just how illegal are non-road cans? Basically one I am looking at is classed as a race can and therefore not road legal.

Just how much trouble is this likely to bring me? What is the punishment the police dish out?

Get a road can with removable baffles, then take the baffles out and the can doesnt say "not for road use" on it. Thumbs Up

Think its just a fine and producer, same as small plates

Also depends on how angry the policeman is, as I think you can be done for no insurance or something along those likes?

Get an E marked can and then remove the baffel.

I suspect the usual punishment would just be a rectification notice, maybe a fine if you're unlucky.

The bigger issue is that you might fail MOTs if the tester says it's too loud. If it says "Not for road use" or similar, then you'll have to polish that out because it will not pass an MOT like that.

I suspect most bikes with aftermarket cans are probably illegally loud.

MOT is easy to get round, i'd just stick the standard item back on, like I used to put my CAT back onto my old saxo for mot.

I'm more concerned by a copper pulling me in for it.

Have to say when I had my private reg on I went out with Cleveland Police and they never battered an eye lid at the extremely illegal spacing on it (all legal fonts and no dodgy letter mind)

Yeah I think it soley depends on the cop who pulls you. I've been riding round with a *loud* race can for 2 years now, and a illegal number plate & only just been pulled for the first time last week. He was ok though & just gave me a producer & told me to change the plate. No fines or anything & he didn't pick up on the race can... which was nice! Thumbs Up

The removable baffle cans are a good idea but I'm not convinced that they will always save your bacon just because they are 'E' marked. If you get stopped by a copper who is wise enough to know about race cans/illegal exhausts etc, I'm sure that they will be well aware just by looking at the exit port of your can whether you are running with the baffle in or out. And at the end of the day if your baffle is not present, then the exhaust can doesn't comply with the law, despite what approval marking your can may be stamped with.
