Hi,

Got some basic issues with my 1995 GS500E that are starting to piss me off.

The bike won't start without choke, if I use choke to get it started, and then switch it off the bike has a lot of trouble revving past 2,000rpm, it will make popping noises and the revs keep dipping until it finally manages to rev up, any ideas what this could be? It's not returning to idle at all unless it's been ragged for about 15 miles.

Could this be the carbs out of balance?

Also, my choke cable is sticky and I'm having to manually push the plunger in on the carbs, any ideas on how to free this up?

Cheers,

T

Has it been sitting for any length of time, or has it just started doing this?

You can lube the choke cable, but it may be that its corroded within the sleeve, so might not get it to be that free.

Just started doing it

Jo's (Babyyam) fella noticed that the choke was sticking, and it's been doing it since then, so it is not unreasonable to assume that this problem has been occuring for the duration I've owned the bike, and I'm only just now starting to run with the choke fully off.

sounds like an air leak some where, if its popping,
thats proply why it runs ok with the choke on,
get the bike running, then spray wd40 at the carbs both before the carb and between it and the engine,
if the revs change at all, you have an air leak Very Happy
that gs of yours seems to be a bit of a lemon toby Very Happy
i havn't had any issue with my 95 apart from the starter relay died,

thats not a starting problem , I have bigger starting issues, go ask Gmanxii , he had the pleasure of seeing me start it , misfire multiple times then had to be bumped.

Sounds like you are maybe just keeping it on the choke for too long - the plugs are getting sooted up and it takes a while to burn it all off before it runs right.

Try backing the choke off in fractions and quicker. Only when the bike cuts out when you move the choke down are you going too fast!

finpos.

So I should let the choke out slowly? Ok, that makes sense.

I've had the tank off and I've had a look, can hear the slides snapping shut when I release the throttle, all cables seem connected ok, One of the connectors to the left hand coil was off though? Would this of happened while I was removing the fuel tank or could this be an explanation? I'm not sure if it'd run or not like that.

Got another problem

I have a hose coming from a t piece on my carbs (#58 on here: https://www.ronayers.com/fiche/300_0027/carburetor/carburetor.jpg) but it doesn't seem to connect to anything? It's on a pipe that links both carbs together as you can see, The pipe rotates... So I'm not sure if it's a breather or not? There was a spare clip on one of my air filter securing screws so I've clipped it in there for now...

Could be a breather hose, but i'd go with the feeling that you are leaving the choke on too long. You literally only need the choke on for 15 seconds tops and then gradually reduce it until it runs normally. Quite often when coming off the choke I give it slight revs, so when I put the choke back to normal it will still run ok. Hope this helps.

Took tank off, lubricated choke cable at carb end, replaced fuel tank, now i've got the problem! Something to do with the loose hose?

Did putting the choke on during the run make any difference?

Checked the link, didn't seem to work, so not sure about the carb pipe.

Unless the wire has come off the coil again and its only running on one cylinder...start it and CAREFULLY check the exhaust pipes to see of one is cold, or at least cooler. Just run it for a couple of seconds, if using hands, else try a damp cloth and listen for the hiss agains the hot pipe
