Can anyone help solve a problem on a 1998 mint R1 - 8000 original miles, no modifications.
There is a hole in the left hand side of the cylinder head just under the frame spar where the engine bolts to the frame.
When the engine is running oil leaks out of the hole.
I have changed the oil pressure release valve and the oil strainer.

Wondering why the hole is even there and what its for and how to stop the oil leaking ??

Let me know if any answers
Cheers
Mad Mick

This might be a drain hole for the spark plugs, so that if the plug recess fills with water it can run off out of this hole. The oil may be coming from a worn camcover gasket or a loose sparkplug causing oil to leak into the recess and drain out of the hole.

Id say check the cam cover gasket and the cam cover is tight then check all the plugs are in tight too.

The sheer power produced from a 98 R1, was obviously enough to destroy steel.

Serious answer, ask your local garage of their opinion, or it could be that a '98 R! has finally let the side down Wink causing rumours of it being anything but indestructible..

the hole you are referring to is probably the oil pressure check bolt, it's on the left hand side of the casing,if you are sat on the bike. there is supposed to be a bolt in there. might of vibrated loose.it's just so you can check that the oil is pressurised ok and is reaching the top block of the engine and your cams ok.you just loosen the bolt a little with the engine running and if oil seeps out the pressures fine.hope this helps.
