Hi,
Has anyone here had a bone graft before, in pertictular in their arm?
I ask as where i had metal work in my arm, where one of the plates broke about 6months ago. I was told today i will be needing a bone graft as i have recently fractured it (i reckon it was at the gym i did this)
Also, how long before you could ride a motorbike again? i hope to get this done christmas so have the summer to enjoy.
What were the scars like aswell? the scars at the moment arnt too bad and dont want them being horrible after this bone graft
Thanks and hope someone can help ____________________ 99 RS125 --> 02 SV650s --> 03 Speed Four --> 92 RXS100 --> 93 CB400sf --> 01 CB600f Hornet |

I have a bone graft on the distal radius on my right wrist.
the fracture was caused when I went over the car in my crash, and I must have put my hand out. it totally crushed it.
the graft was taken as a disk of bone cut from my pelvis.
My crash happened at the start of September, and the wrist was pinned and in a cast until just before Xmas. After that, it was very weak, and even now (4 1/2 years later) limited in movement, however, my strength came back no problem.
I now suffer some lack of range of movement, but can go rock climbing, skiing and riding just like I used to.
in terms of how long I waited, I didn't feel I had enough strength to do much for at least 6 months after the cast was off, but I don't remember it holding me back much in terms of day-to-day life.

Had one in my leg (femur) but it was to bridge a big gap before my plate snapped . . .
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v112/finglonga/gap.jpg
That was 12 months ago next week and was about 3-4Months before I could put full weight back on it.
Don't know about the scar as they went in through the same place the bit of bone popped out my leg.
Still have very limited movement in my knee 90degrees max at the moment so still no bike for me yet! ____________________ Andy Sez....

They have said they will take the bone from my fixed bone but the thinner one is the one that causing the problems. I think they opted out of taking from my pelvis as that was recently broken.
Does anyone know anyone that has had a bone graft 6+ months after metalwork was put in?
Thanks for the comments so far, want to know as much about this as i can as dont want to be out for too long with uni exams and riding ____________________ 99 RS125 --> 02 SV650s --> 03 Speed Four --> 92 RXS100 --> 93 CB400sf --> 01 CB600f Hornet |

They "were" going to use Bone Morphogenetic Protein treatment where the gap would have been injected with for wan't of a better word a type of polyfilla for bones. It was cancelled as it would have cost £50,000+ to do the gap in my femur.
Then they said they couldn't use my bone as there wasn't enough for the gap again. They would use Femoral heads from hip ops to graft onto my bone. . . . So God only knows who's bones I have in me now. ____________________ Andy Sez....

If it's just to pack in where two bits of bone aren't healing together, they usually just drill into a bit of bone and collect the 'swarf'. They pack that into the fracture site.
If it's a big defect, they'd take a whole 'bit' of bone, shape it and fix it in place.
It's the standard way of sorting out a non-union but they may need to re-apply any plates that are in there. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
