And the sensor won't be very complex if it is that. It's usually just a small plunger on a spring with a wire on one end. Probably just needs a clean.

All they usually do is make contact with part of the gear selector mechanism when it's in neutral and allow the warning light to earth itself. Nothing overly complex.

I don't know the exact details of your bike but it is usually somewhere in the area behind the front sprocket (under the plastic cover next to your left foot as you sit on the bike) with a single wire going to it.

Assuming the wire is intact (broken wire is another possible reason for neutral light failure, it's pretty exposed), the switch itself should simply unscrew. Just watch for a tiny little spring pinging off into the workshop drain as you do so. Then just a case of rubbing any muck off the contact with emery paper and refitting it.

Mind you, it is almost certainly the bulb because kawasaki use the neutral switch in their safety interlock. If you can start the bike in neutral without touching the clutch, the neutral switch is working ok.

Err. I think it pretty much has to be one of those three things, because that's all there is.

Is power getting to the bulb?

There could be a microrelay in the fuse box too I suppose.

I agree with stinkwheel, one of those components has more or less got to be faulty. The neutral switch/light doesn't get much more complex than a sensor, the wiring and the light on the dash.

Have you used a continuity meter on the switch and the frame?

It should beep when in neutral, and be silent when in gear.

Followup:

Bizzarely but its NOT the switch, it works perfetly (so does the spare) the problem is actually the tab inside the gearbox!

Apparently (a common fault) the brass neutral tab wears down, eventually so much that the switch isn't triggered, madness, but there's 3 others with the same problem an another forum, so just a shitty bit of design.. Engine out job to fix..

(think hes secretly pleased to have a feeble excuse for a tarty digi indicator)
