indicator rules / mot question?

Please confirm the following for me,

As far as i understand it is not illegal to run a bike wihtout indicators, but if it has indicators fitted dthey must work correctly.

Does this mean if i remove the indicators i have to remove the switch and wiring too?

This would be on a 1980 kawasaki by the way.

Correct for a bike that old. As to the switch that tends to depend on how strict the tester wants to be. It doesn't say in the old manuals floating around on the web, but could be insinuated by wording on perminantly disconnected.

According to my MOT tester, provided the bike is pre august 1986(or thereabouts) If they arent fitted, they arent tested, that includes the switch and telltale, even if they are still on the bike.

FWIW, the exemption on indicators also applies to enduro and trials 'bikes that are not normally used on the road. My KTM doesn't have indicators, and the switch and tell-tale have both been removed. I have them in a box somewhere...

But Mr Kickstart is right that they're optional on a 'bike of 1980 vintage.

i picked up a Z500 today and it has the worlds biggest indicators on it, there fucking enormouse, thats why i want to get rid of them, might be possible to get some smaller but still classic styled ones i guess?

what do you reckon, no indicators = bad idea?

my indicators havent worked for about 4 months now. it's probably just a loose connection somewhere as they work fine from teh alarm. but i'll be jiggered if i can be active enough to get off my arse to fix it.
hand signals prove useful.

Not like some people actually look anyway. Indicated to change lanes and people have sped up! (don't think it was on purpose, they just didn't look at my indicators)
Went around a roundabout the other day in the right lane clearly indicating, then i get beeped at by some random guy when i go into my turning.

If direction indicators are fitted they must meet the requirements of this inspection, but need not be fitted to a machine which:
. cannot exceed 30mph / 50kph, or
. was first used before 1 August 1986, or
. 'off road' machines which are designed
to carry only the rider.
. 'off road' machines with side car designed to carry the rider and one passenger in the side car.

off road machines are constructed or adapted primarily for use off roads (whether by reason of its tyres, suspension, ground clearance or otherwise).

I'm sure someone mentioned on here how they removed the indicators and simply taped over the switch so you could not move it.?

I guess it all falls down to how friendly the tester is.

ive removed my indies on my cat, just use arm signals and be carefull and ive never been asked about it.

Saying that they wernt removed, the rear never got put on after i got my tail tidy, so i just taped over the front to be legal.
